On the BotL cigar safari, we had two different "blending sessions"--Drew Estates and Joya de Nicaragua--where we each picked the different tobacco leaves we wanted to make up the filler, binder and wrappers (specifying ligero, seco, or viso). Then with our specifications in hand the expert rollers bunched, rolled, and wrapped our "custom blends". I'll post a picture of the paperwork we each filled out. At each session the factories had piles of the different leaves for use to smell and feel, as well as actually lighting the whole leaf on fire and smelling the pure combusted tobacco. Very cool and super informative. We learned about the importance of vertical and horizontal blending to create a "balanced" cigar as well as one that will burn without constant relights.

I assume a "custom rolled" could also be done by just telling a blender/roller what your personal preferences in cigars are and then, they would come up with a blend customed to your tastes (?)

The first picture is from the Joya de Nicaragua blending session:

This is from the DE session--much more variety to choose from:

We also chose what size and vitola we wanted. It was a lot of fun and with the help of the expert tobacco men at arm's reach--including Willy Herrera, Podman, Eric, and Jonathan Drew himself I'm confident we each got some great custom rolled cigars!

That sounds like it might be a "custom rolled" just for that specific shop--the owner's preferences or what the bulk of his customers prefer?

I'm not 100% certain but have always assumed that the COH custom rolled cigars are a blend that was done specifically for COH. Basically their private label or "store" brand similar to Great Value at WalMart, Husky at Home Depot or Kobalt at Lowes.

Correct. I believe the blend was developed with the asian market in mind.
