Today my 20 year old daughter calls me at work crying. She begins by telling me that she just returned from the Vet where she had to have her pet "Tony Lucas" put down. Tony is a Guinea pig! The diagnosis was cancer and the cost was $175 :crosseyed. I don't want to sound insensitive but she only had the thing for 4 months and I doubt it cost more than 20 bucks, and cancer? WTF, what did she buy a PETA rescued rodent from a research lab or something?

I consoled her, told her to please stop buying disposable pets and if she really feels the need to have another one to make it something a bit more lasting like a tortoise.

Unbelievable!

I like animals but you are right on track with this. My daughter took a stray cat from the neighborhood to the vet and spent $250 on it. It had an ear infection...

My wife had to go with a co-worker yesterday to have her pet mouse put down. It kept on scratching its back open. But the co-worker wanted it to first be anesthetized before they gave the lethal injection so that it would not suffer. She then sat with the thing on her lap on a paper towel while the dose was given. Also probably a $10 pet but she is crazy about animals. Not sure what the cost was.

People become attached to their pets, they become like members of the family....whatca gonna do? :dunno:

I've had my dog almost 16 years and I'm sure when she passes it's gonna be a very difficult time for me!

I'm sure the vet knew someone in the area with a very large snake. She could have donated the little thing as food. No more cancer and the snake wouldn't have to eat for a while.

can't you just drop the thing in a river or something??? you said your daughter is 20yo? Now that is actually a little frightening 20yo and crying about a fuggin' rat.

I just wish she would have waited for me to get home so I could have dealt with it instead of her.

Poor little thing. But it is too much of an exaggeration.
I had two small birds (they looked like parrots) and they died by the 3rd year. I'll say it was fun havin' them, they did freakish stuff, i was sad, but didn't cry to tell ya the truth. It happened when it had to happen.

Be glad you have a sensitive daughter. When my dog Tbone died I cried like a baby. Got him when he was six weeks old. He died at age 12. Still hurts when I think about him. People treat critters better than they treat people. WTF!!! Life is a trip.

I can understand getting attached to a dog you interact with it a lot, I can understand people's attachments to cats as well but a rat? I don't get it.
