I sat down on the couch outside with a glass of water, my pen, my notebook, and went to work.
The Diplomaticos #5 had a golden brown wrapper, was slightly silky, bumpy, and had a dull sheen. It almost looked as though it was square-pressed, but that my have been from being squeezed in a dress box with his neighbors.
The prelight draw was perfect. It was the best of any small cigar I've had. The taste was musty, like a cellar. It had a hint of spice, but mostly that creepy cobweb taste.
When I first fired it up it struck me as odd that this thing smelled like a smoldering campfire. Very woody, almost cedary. The first few puffs were almost overwhelmingly spicy and full of salty twang. The sweetness came in the aftertaste, which was very creamy.
Through the first quarter, I could tell I was in for a ride. The nicotine was already hitting me, and the smoke was becoming a bit sweeter. At this point, the smoke tasted very nearly like caramel corn, nuts and all. It was great. The spiciness had faded a little, but the back of my throat still felt like it was growing fur from the initial blast of spice. The burn wavered a bit, but was even overall. At the end of the first quarter, the spice began to pick up again, oh boy!
Up to the halfway point, it was very consistent; just a straigthforward twangy sweet and spiciness. The sweet and spice made it taste like black licorice, very tasty. The nuttiness from the first quarter gave way to creaminess as I approached the 3/4 point.
Three-quarters though the cigar, the sweetness was still very apparent, as was the spiciness and twang. The creaminess I had mentioned earlier turned to more of a nutty-sweet taste.
The finish wasn't what I was expecting. At this point, there was ~1 1/8" of the cigar left. Everything seemed to drop off, spiciness, sweetness, you name it. It was this way for a good 10 puffs before the cedary taste and smell returned right as I was finishing.
All in all, a great little cigar. It had a lot of unique flavors that I'm sure to revisit when I smoke this Dip4 that I've got lying around. It burned very evenly, with ash starting out light gray then transitioning into a zebra-like pattern.
Time Smoked: 40 mins.
It gets my recommendation!
