It's cold as balls!

I have a 3 car garage and I use the 3rd car bay as a wood shop and smoking area. I'm also going to start doing monthly poker nights with the guys in the space as well. That said, and the fact that it's flipping cold, I'm thinking about getting a Space Heater that hangs on the wall.

I have zero experience with these so I'm wondering if any of you have one (or two) that you would recommend. Additionally, are there brands/components to steer clear of?

I know I don't want to go the route of propane attachments as they are simply not strong enough to heat the entire area. Great for the shed out back but that's it.

Parabolic heater...bought my first one 8 years ago and now own 3 of them and put one in my Great Room which has a 22 foot ceiling....works great. I use one in my 3 car garage and use the first bay as my winter cigar room....by a half hour you'll be shedding your jacket and just need a sweatshirt even in 20 degree temps.

WHOA! I just looked those up and they look like they start around $575. I bet they work great but I'm looking to stay under $250ish.
Check craigslist. They should come in around $100-200. If not, talk them down. Call a couple of HVAC guys...they pull furnaces all the time. $575 is way too much for a used furnace.

I've got a 3 car garage with a medium gas heater that doesn't keep up very well if it's below freezing (freezing my cajones off as I smoke right now :(). It also adds $200 a year to my gas bill. Localized heat is way better for the application you're describing...

Great insights - thanks!

What about a wood stove? It would mean punching a hole in the wall for the chimney but they're pretty efficient for heating a space like that.

Used these types in large fish houses - we all used Empire 25,000 btu heaters

My garage has a large ceiling unit heater but the wife hates me smoking in it - so I don't, unless her father comes into town smoking cigarettes! Over the holidays she was mad for a week - come on summer!

My garage has a used home forced air furnace. Works great for my 2.5 car garage.
This is the route I want to go. We're going to get the garage insulated first, and are looking at heating options. My wife will have her candle-pouring studio in half of the front portion of the garage, and my smoking room is in the rear "3rd car" portion. Saw some on CL for something like $200, which is reasonable.

I did the used furnace. Really kicks ass.

I got the parabolic heater from costco. Awesome but keep in mind it's radiant heat so it won't heat up a room, just whatever is in front of it. Still works like a charm for me as I just plop it front of me.
