A buddy/shop owner told me that Spain is guaranteed 60% of all Cuban cigar production by a very old agreement. Is anyone else aware of this? He said if Cubans where ever to become available in the US they would probably be imported from Spain.

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. - Spain imported $145 million in goods from Cuba in 2016, 19% of which was classified as "rolled tobacco". Assuming that all of this was cigars, 19% of the $145 million total works out to be $27.55 million worth of cigars.

I have to agree with you Glassman. Now I'm trying to figure out where my friend got his information. He normally knows what he's talking about so I'm trying to figure out where the mistake is. I did find an article talking about Spain having a guarantee of 30% of bulk leaf from Cuba and we where talking about what would happen if Cubans ever became legal in the US. The validity of the article and how that would relate to future US sales is questionable.

Spain has imported Cuban tobacco in bulk for decades,to provide for cigar rollers to roll for Spanish consumption.
A great deal of this is done in the Canary Islands.
Penamil is/was a great cigar from the Canarys with some Cuban tobacco in it, I enjoyed these way back in the '70s and '80s.
There are many brands from the Canary Islands, and even Canada has a Cuban tobacco cigar rolled there, Tueros.
Lots of Cuban tobacco leaves the island to be crafted elsewhere into cigars.
Back around 2000,the percentage of bulk leaf going to Spain was around 50% of the unrolled leaf annually.
There have been adjustments due to weather and reduced interest in cigars in Spain.
