... you check your credit card activity and find that some unknown person charged $14,000 worth of kitchen stuff on your account. :shame:

Citibank used to be pretty good - calling and inquiring about unusually high $$$ transactions. I can see our TARP money has definitely not gone toward keeping customer service high and fraud attempts low. :disappoin

Another good reason to keep limits low. Good luck getting this fixed quickly bro.
I'm a firm believer in limiting credit spending limits as well because of situations like this. It seems as if its all to easy to loose CC information to the electronic sleuth these days.

I really hope this all gets resolved for you.

Even worse is when you find out that someone charged thousands of dollars worth of kitchen stuff to your account . . . and then you have to install it all.

LOL! Been there already ... twice! :roundtheh

Finally got through to Citi this morning (their "24 hour / always available" customer service line was not working last night) and had the charges tagged as fraud. Got a new account ... yadda yadda. I'm not too concerned about my credit limit as my wife and I only use one card (and have made large purchases in the past / but not recently). Also, I regularly monitor the account and sweep my computer for bugs. Still, it is a hassle to transfer to a new account.

Also, I often wonder (as this is not my first time to this rodeo) ... what happens on the other end of these transactions? Is this some kid fooling around? Organized crime? Is some truck driver being notified that he needs to bring that load of oak cabinets back to the shop?

I am not for low credit limits....why punish me for the protection of the credit card companies....you are only liable for $50 max by law for fraudulent charges. Ted didn't say if it was one $14,000 charge or numerous totalling 14K??? If it was one charge, the bank was stupid not to verify the transaction. When I was in Vegas this month, my bank called me to verify the activity going on at numerous places in Vegas.....simple phone call and acknowledgement of the charges by me.

These were two high $$ charges and two small ones. Perhaps testing the waters with the small ones ...?

I have been contacted in the past to verify large transactions, but this time they dropped the ball.

Yeah, that does suck, but very common nowadays. Important to have a CC with fraud protection as most of them nowadays have. My bank will actually send me an email requiring me to authorize transactions if it seems suspicious to them, that said I only have received 1 alert for something I have purchased over the last 4-5 years so not really sure how effective it is really.

Very odd. Citi has one of the better fraud prevention departments of all card companies. They bought out so many that they may have become overwhelmed. I know a change of state usually triggers a call. You were right though, they test with a couple of small transactions to see if the card is reported stolen. then go for it.
