Anyone live in a town house or duplex? What do you like/dislike about em? How do you handle roofs/ insurance and stuff as a home owner? We were looking to sell our house and downsize but the wife found one thats larger than our house and it would be about half the note #winning lol. It needs some tlc on the inside but would be worth it. We are still debating it

I've been looking at one for my girlfriend and I as well. I'll be following this closely. I've heard that the taxes are lower than owning a home, but you have the complex fees to deal with too. But that includes everything I think....at least here in NY.

Aaron, I have a friend who sold an older, high-maintenance home three years ago for a condo. Despite the association fees, he really enjoys the freedom from dealing with repairs and outside maintenance. It's a major relief. That said, you should seriously consider what life will be like without a backyard. Where will your little guy rip around on his Power Wheels? ;)

Believe it or not, some of them actually have private parks for the kids and of course the clubhouse, etc for the adult crowd. Not very common, but it's around. That's a valid point for someone looking to have kids too. I didn't think of that part....

Well after talking w family were probally going to pass its a he'll of a deal but would require alot of cash to fix all of the flooring and trim in a house of that size. Also looked up the prior owners electric bill and it was running 2-300 a month. Whole idea is to downsize bills to quickly eliminate all debt and start building a proper future. (Increase cigar budget ;)) found a cozy foreclosure less than a mile down the street were looking at pretty hard. It has a nice basement and a oversized two car garage and a half acre lot

Read the CCR's. I put hardwood floors in mine only to get slapped with a fine and being forced to remove them after 2 years because "hard surface flooring" wasn't allowed in my particular unit.
If you can get it below market, and the HOA isn't too outlandish, it's probably a good bet.

Make sure you research the area as well. Living in such close proximity to your neighbors, make sure it's where you want to be.

5 bedrooms for 65k ? Who died there? Is it haunted? Wish we had those kinds of prices here.
It's in the same school district I bought in earlier this year, prices here are low now ever since news broke that the state gave the school district a bad rating. Asking prices on everything in the district dropped overnight. It's how I got into my place.

@luckysaturn13 you should keep looking for a place in my town - the new smoke shop up by WalMart is building a walk-in humi! :D

Its really wild how much prices vary around here. Its all nice around here but if you go 15min east closer to st louis that same house would jump to closer to 180+ . Where im at now is about th end of reasonable prices. 5 min from me a 1/3 acre lot of land goes from 125-190k then prices stay high until you get close to the rougher spots of the inner city and county. That house is in a nice town but proces drop fast once you get more than an hr out of stl
