Just like broadband its life changing technology. My personal favorite of the ones I've used are the Dish Network DVR's, but our cable company (Charter) uses Motorola's MOXI box. The MOXI is nice, but the menus are awful slow in responding which annoys me to no end.
I've had one for over a year now ( Dish ). It is convienent to record programs and then watch later. Also neat to rewind and replay, especially for sports. And fast forwarding through the commercials is great!
But ..... I find that the hardware is prone to hard disk problems. I've had to replace my DVR twice. Seems like the lifespan is about 6 months so far.
My next computer will be a Linux based DVR. The only problem I am having so far is making sure that the hardware I need to buy is compatible with Linux.
I'm looking into one also, the way things r changing so damn fast, I'm thinking of leasing one from the cable company (till things slow down) if they ever will :dunno:
I have the one from our cable company. It's one of those technologies where once you have it, you wonder how you got along without it. Really screws you up when you watch live TV and start trying to fast forward through commercials. If it's an option, I really like the true TiVO boxes I've seen. Lots of storage (compared to the tiny bit I have) and better functionality.
I've had one for just over a year, the HD model from our cable company, Cox. I can't live without it anymore. I find myself in a hotel room just pissed off because I can't pause a tv show or rewind a particular scene. I love the ease of recording something...it's made life easier since the wifey can operate it easily!
I still remember thinking my friends that had TIVO where walking commercials. Now that I have a dvr from my cable company I understand all the fuss. I watch more shows in even less time by zipping through all of the commercials. And I only watch the shows that I want, not just what is currently on the boob tube. I do not think that I have watch a "live" show, except for sports in over a year.
