I bought a few of these as part of a CC sampler. Now that I have smoked a couple of them I thought I would record my impressions. When I first started smoking cigars back in the 1990's I always enjoyed a smooth, mellow smoke in the mornings with coffee. Back then that meant Macanudo, RyJ and those Dunhills in the white tube with the blue lettering. Now days with the increased quality of cigars in general with their intense flavor loaded with spice and pepper I have found it a bit of a challenge to find a morning cigar that gives me that good flavor without the spice and pepper that is so preferred by today's cigar smoker.
The Choix Supreme is a regular production cigar made at the H. Upmann factory and measures 48 ring X 127mm. It's beautiful to look at with a smooth shiny wrapper. The scent at the foot is just sweet tobacco.
After a straight cut I made my first attempt to toast and light the cigar with a cedar strip. While successful I nearly scorched by beard. Need more practice with this. The cigar lit beautifully with a bit of a firm draw but with plenty of smoke production. Initial bit of spice and sweet cedary smoke that was very creamy was my initial impression. The burn was very good though slightly wavy. No re-lights or touch-ups were required. The ash held well. Throughout the first third the flavors stayed very consistently mild, sweet and cedary. Very elegant. My wife came out on the porch to join me and said that the scent of the smoke was lovely and sweet.
The second third was more of the same. Still very creamy sweet and cedary with a few light notes of leather appearing. Burn was excellent and the smoke was nearly perfect at this point with morning coffee. The warm 62 degree morning with sunshine added to my overall enjoyment of this smoke.
The final third was just super. Mild and mellow throughout. Notes of the sweetness continue with a bit more leather coming in and out. Smooth to the finish.
OK. This is probably not a cigar that everyone would enjoy. It is subtle, mild and elegant. The flavors are seamlessly integrated and not at all complex but for me in the morning I can not imagine a stick that I would enjoy more.
