There may be a lull in sweet rides, but they will find a way to make cars that are "fuel" efficient, and haul ass. Designers are, after all, car geeks.

I'm not sure how much you guys know about diesels but they are 20%ish more efficient than a gasoline motor, and have crazy power nowadays. Take the 6.6L duramax. If compared to the 6.0L gas I was/am getting 5-7 mpg better around town. On the highway my 6500lb 4wd truck was getting 20+. In order to have comparable power with a gas motor you needed the 8.1L big block. Say hello to 7mpg around town and maybe 11 highway. Ooh and speaking of Audi anyone remember the Lemans(I think it was lemans) last here where audi entered a turbo diesel and blew away the competition? It was because they had to stop less for fuel due to the engine only turning 9000rpm vs like 15000rpm for the gas engine while making the same torque.

The wave of the near future is turbo diesel. I just wish the country would get it's head out of it's ass and realize gasoline/ethanol is a waste of time and money. The way to go in my opinion is algae harvesting research and use the oil from the algae to produce biodiesel. We should not be using food stock to get the oil needed for such a venture.

Didn't the same thing supposedly happen in the 60's or 70's?

And diesels are getting quiet too! I was surprised at how quiet the new F250 was.

Well back when the country tried to do the diesel engine thing the american manufacturers dragged the diesel reputation through the mud when they tried to make light duty applications. They had head gasket problems and just couldn't make something that would hold together. I think GM actually tried to basically convert a 350sb into a diesel application. It failed miserably. Someone older than me can probably clarify this stuff a bit more than I can I'm only 24.

Kinda gets me excited for when i buy a new car...in 3 years. I'm all about being green and i agree with EODCOLE in that ethanol is not the answer. That is some politicians pet project and a way for him to make millions. Having been directly involved in the building of ethanol plants, it's a waste of time for everyone...it won't solve the entire problem, but will in turn only drive the prices of everything up. Making ethanol is more expensive than refining oil, so the cost of fuel will go up, causing the price of consumer products to go up across the board. Name one thing that doesn't get delivered by combustible engine.

It's the wrong direction in the search for alternative fuels. And the whole E-85 fuel found at a whopping 27 pumps nationwide???Give me a break.

My guess is there's an oil man behind this campaign because he knows it won't work.

Quite frankly, i'm glad it's the end of an era. We've known it's coming for ove 15 years yet we keep stalling. The US is the last to jump on the bandwagon...we're so smart. And another...

OK, i'm going down roads that are making my blood pressure rise. Not good.

Anyhow, i'll be excited to buy that new car that runs efficiently.
