Happy New Year BOTL!

First post of 2008 here. I wanted to see if any of you are familiar with the following site:

http://www.justfakes.com/

I couldn't believe my eyes. These guys are selling these lables! No wonder we have to live in fear.

Hey EZRIDER,

As of right now, whilst replying, I'm smoking a Cuaba Exclusivos...the draw is a little however. Interestingly, a few right out of the 'ole box were incredible!

I think I need to let the rest of them sleep for a while. But I enjoy a multitude of cigars, not just CC's. I was taught by my mentor to take into consideration the time of day, and what if anything is on my palate, also a great deal depends on my budget at the time and what's sleeping in the humi.

But I really enjoy the RyJ Churchills/Short Churchills Tubos, the Por Larranaga cabinet....forget about it, Partagas petit corona's, Cohiba Siglo II, Trinidad Fundadores, SLR petit corona & regios, Vegas Robaina- anything, Diplomaticos when I want to abuse myself...very strong :crackwhip, Raphael Gonzales for sure mid-morning.

With the advent of color printers that turn out picture quality prints and worldwide cheap labor there is almost no product that is safe from counterfeiters. Best bet is to always buy from trusted sources .... But unless you are getting it straight from the manufacturer you can never be 100% certain.

Yep, that site is old news... though they must be doing pretty well because the selection now is larger than I remember. If those bands are quality, could be a useful resource for the guys who decorate ashtrays, do ornaments, etc.

On a side note, they'll fake anything:

Thats from here http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/for/525486281.html
Fake Fuente Chili Peppers on Ebay is another recent phenomenon.

Stick with good sources and avoid "deals". Even if you received genuine cigars, thats not to say they haven't been mistreated. Good sources not only mean legit, but also well kept stock. Worth the few extra dollars you might pay.

No I was serious, I've only been doing this for a bout 6 months and most of my cigars were once owned by fellow BOTLs. So I have never had to worry about fakes. Has anyone ever made a glass topped box?

Seeing as how I am a noob I will ask a totally noob question. Looking at all the various lengths that some go to in making their counterfeit sticks look legit I have to ask, do counterfeit cigars taste that bad?

I'm assuming there are various degress of the quality of counterfeit cigars, but has anybody ever had a "not half-bad" fake Cohiba, Monte etc.?

I guess I'm just thinking that with all the time and effort put into trying to make the fake look as real as possible, are they at least trying to make the cigar itself somewhat tasty?

My buddy at work bought a box of Punch Tubos that were determined fake after a little research. We had one just to see and iwe both enjoied the entire cigar. And rarely do I nub a longer smoke. If we hadn't known they were fakes, it would have been better, but a blind taste test would have had me giving a thumbs up. Of course some of the cigars were so fat that they were hard to get out of the tube and the wrappper tore. The difference in wrappper color was huge, some dark and some light and soe inbetween. I would imagn that would have had an affect on the taste of other smokes in the box.

As not a noob I can honestly say some are not bad, some are total shit. You really have no way of knowing.

I have seen a box of fake Partagas ELs, VERY convincing packaging as well as very good looking cigars... these were tough to judge by sight, but a whiff of the box was much like sniffing powdered laundry detergent, and they smoked about as bad as you'd expect smoking laundry detergent to taste.

But in contrast, I've had a couple very suspect cigars that actually tasted like Cuban tobacco... but not what a particular cigar should taste like. I've heard of finding hair and newspaper in fake cigars too, and for the most part, you will find mixed fillers.

And No, Fuente doesn't do glasstops. Nor does Cohiba.
Pinar does though! :nodlaugh:

We had one just to see and we both enjoyed the entire cigar.
If someone ordered the makings from the fake site, and rebanded some quality cigars, then someone who didn't know any better would be enjoying their smokes.

Lets say you took domestic Montes at $90/box and made em look like Cuban Monte #2s and sold em for $500 to someone with too much cash and too little knowledge.

Thats $380 or so worth of ill gotten gain.
Obviously using $5/bundle cigars nets more profit.

The RCMP reported more than 90% of cigars in Canada are believed to be fakes and claimed to have a major problem. Anywhere money like that is so easy to make, you're gonna have a counterfeit problem. Thats why cruise ships, resorts in Mexico, etc.. don't make good places to shop for a smoke. Canada is an especially great candidate due to their extremely high excise taxes, buying from LCdH will cost you 2x normal going prices... therefore, with Cubans being legal there, and profits being double, do the math!
