Now that I'm missing an upper (it funded my CZ), I'm adding such a project to my burners again.

I think I'm going to go with a "Featherweight" build, inspired by this thread: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?39599-Project-Featherweight

That is relatively close to what my last upper was, though there will be some changes this time around. I won't be going to the extremes of the above thread to shave off weight however.

I'm thinking a 14.5 Lightweight Mid-Length upper. Obviously that leaves me with the pain of not being able to change muzzle devices. But, who honestly changes those?

But beyond that, I can't really decide on anything.

Do I want a FSB or not?
Handguards or lightweight rail?
Sights: Micro & no BUIS, Micro + MBUS, or irons only?
Have somebody like ADCO turn down the barrel even further?

This rifle won't be seeing hard use - in terms of high round counts in short amounts of time. My last one didn't. This is something that is light enough, and handy enough, that I can take it with me EVERY SINGLE TIME I go some place I feel a rifle might be useful: hiking, hunting, whatever.

I'll pretty much be leaving my lower alone. Though I'll probably swap out my beloved iMod for something lighter... possibly an old school CAR stock.

So guys, any input? What would you do for a featherweight build?

It's basically a blank canvas right now, and I have a long time before I'll be ready to put it together.

Do I want a FSB or not? I hate any co-witness, and since it doesn't sound like you're building a SHTF rifle… save the oz.

Handguards or lightweight rail? I like rails merely because you can repurpose them quite easily. The Midwest Industries Gen 2 SS has a small diameter if you like that; otherwise, the Noveske NSR is pretty damn light. My last lightweight build for 3gun was based off the Mega MKM upper. Very lightweight and I love the feel of a rifle length handguard, 14.5 barrel, and Noveske KX3. PRI makes some great tubes as well, no frills and perfect with a bit of 3M grip surfacing on the bottom half.

Sights: Micro & no BUIS, Micro + MBUS, or irons only? Not needed if you're scoping this thing.

Have somebody like ADCO turn down the barrel even further? BCM makes pretty good lightweight contour. Bushmaster makes a super lightweight, but they are uber tough to find. Personally, I haven't liked sacrificing a few oz for accuracy… and it's hard to beat 5.56 Noveske offerings.

I would personally use CTR stock, as I hate the CAR stock cheek weld.

I very well just may SBR it. Though I'd prefer to do a trust, and those are still being debated. *sigh* Dumb "gubment".

I prefer 16" barrels so I am not stuck with a pinned and welded muzzle device. I just swapped out an A2 bird cage for a Vortex and am now looking at an ACC can for another rifle, which will require another change. Nice to be able to do yourself. For rails, the lightest on the market right now, is, I believe, the Fortis Rev series.

I might be moving away from the featherweight build, and start a slowwwwwww, longggggg process to a Mk18 clone build. Because they're effin cool.

Eh, there's so many revocable family trust owned sbrs and suppressors out there... I can't see a looming crackdown. I have all my class III items sitting in one. You might as well file soon and start putting it all together. I went back and forth between a 10.5 and 12.5 sbr in 5.56, but I didn't like either very much. Now an 8 inch sbr in 300blk was worth it. Add a 5 inch suppressor and you got a 12.5" squirrel shooter. So much more useful than a MK18 imho.
