VISTA, Calif. - Shortly after the February training exercise in Yuma that killed seven Marines, six of which belonged to Camp Pendletons Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469, three former Marines decided they wanted to pay tribute.
Its always nice to raise a glass for somebody that has passed away and give a cheers before you have a drink, and so we thought itd be a little bit more special to be able to raise a glass and give a cheers to seven fallen heroes with their own beer that was brewed specifically for them, said Aaron Ortega.
Ortega along with Bobby Parson and Levi Schaljo decided they wanted to do something different. They approached Daniel Love at Mother Earth Brew Company at 2055 Thibodo Road, Suite E in Vista to inquire about making a home brew.
I get a little bit overcome when I talk about it, said Love. I would never know what its like to sacrifice what those guys did. Its just a neat thing I guess. It makes me feel good that I was able to take part.

Love offered to help them make the brew and after concocting the perfect recipe, they brewed 310 gallons of the pale ale. The former Marines named the beer Homage.
It came down to homage because thats what this whole thing is about, said Ortega of selecting the name. Were paying homage to seven heroes.
Special labels were created that include the names of each of the seven killed. There are seven stars and the wings on the labels loosely resemble the wings on the squadron patch.
Its got a great taste, said Schaljo. It has a great purpose and were really pleased with it.
The men along with several other volunteers hand bottled 500 bottles of the special brew to be given to the families of those killed as well members of the squadron who are deploying soon.
We feel really bad about what happened but we want you to know that before you guys deploy were behind you. Your community supports you, said Ortega of the message he wants to convey to the deploying Marines.
Love plans to give back again, by offering half of the proceeds from the beers purchased Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m. at Mother Earth Brewing Company in Vista to go to the scholarship fund for the families of the deceased.
