Man, what a shitty way to be let go...

Roughly 400 RadioShack employees were notified they lost their job through and e-mail message. The layoffs are part of a restructuring after the Fort Worth, TX-based electronics retailer’s stock price has fallen steadily over the past few years.
The company announced Aug. 10 that it would cut 400 to 450 jobs, mostly at headquarters, to lower expenses and improve its long-term competitive position in the marketplace. At that time, officials informed employees that layoff messages would arrive via e-mail.
"The work force reduction notification is currently in progress. Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated," the e-mail read.
The employees were then given the option of using the company Intranet to ask questions. Laid-off workers got one to three weeks pay for each year of service, up to 16 weeks for hourly employees and 36 weeks for those with base pay of at least $90,000.
RadioShack has also closed almost 500 stores and consolidated distribution centers to make up for the drop in sales. Sales of cellular phones, a key item for RadioShack, have been disappointing.

One of my friends worked for a company that was doing some layoffs. They didn't know who in his group would be let go.
At least they didn't until one of them realized the HR lady shared her electronic calendar. She had meetings the next week titled " J Robinson- Termination" etc.
Needless to say my friend spent the rest of the week working on his resume and setting up job interviews.

Maybe if radioshack actually sold stuff that you can't get other places instead of turning into a lame consumer electronics store they could actually keep their stores open!

The first time I was laid off as an exec at a major company, I came to work and there was a pile of boxes in my office. Around noon the president called me in and gave me the news. Longest, worst day of my life. I will never forget and never allow that to happen to anyone that ever works for me. Shit happens but we have to treat people like human beings not cattle.

Now off my soap box.

I used to be the "Hatchet Man" at my last company. My boss did not have the stomach to lay people off, or fire them.

Myself, I never had a problem firing someone for cause, and my boss seemed to think that I should have no problem laying people off when work was slow since I was always ready to fire someone.

The problem is, firing someone for cause is different from laying off. If you lied to me, showed up drunk and hurt yourself or someone else, or screwed something up and it cost the company alot of money, well, then I had no problem sacking you and walking you to the parking lot. That was the easy part.

Laying people off in a small company, that is a bit different. The company I worked for was pretty small, 14 people made up the main labor force. We would hire extra plumbers, laborers and operators depending on how many jobs we had going on at any one time. The problem was, when jobs got finished we had to lay off people who were "not quite up to snuff" as far as my boss was concerned.

Many of those people were great employees, and some of them were friends of mine. Many of those people have gone on to much better jobs, and some of them I have worked for since I quit my last job.

The people that I fired, I had NO problem what-so-ever showing them the door. The people I had to lay off, every one of them wanted to know why I was singling them out. Those were the hardest ones to let go, they genuinely did not know why I had to lay them off. I had no choice in the matter, it was directed by the superintendant, (my Boss), and I felt bad for these guys.

The only thing that made me feel better about it was the fact that almost %90 of the guys I had to lay off were at least eligible for unemployment insurance, but there were a few that got quite upset with me.

Bottom line, as I stated above, several of those people I had to lay off have contacted me and asked me to work for them for extended periods of time, and for a decent wage. People in a giant corporation might not feel the need to make contacts and build relationships with the people that work for them but I personally don't like to burn bridges with people that might come back to haunt me.

Sooner or later the upper management of RadioShack are going to be shit-canned and they will not be able to call on their former employees or peers for help.

This is truely weak IMHO. I don't fire alot of employees but I do "fire" patients for being noncompliant with their narcs. We have a war zone down here where most people sell their narcotics. I do random drug screens and many fail. I don't send them a letter like my bosses wish. I look each and everyone in the eye and ask questions. I tell them to their face my decision. I get cursed, and have even had a patient question my soul with God. It's difficult but a job I take on willingly. A letter or an email is a weak persons way out of a difficult situation.
