Hello, all!

Yesterday I purchased my first firearm (delayed because I live in the People's Republic of Massachusetts). It's a 1937 Mosin Nagant, from the Izhevsk manufacture. Freaking gorgeous rifle. Got it pretty cheap, too, and everything's in fine working order.

I'm wondering about naming the rifle. I've looked up various Russian female names, and my best bet currently is Polina, but it's all quite tentative now. Trying to find a good feel to it, so if anyone's got any ideas, post below.

And, finally, the weapon has several markings on it. Some I've been able to identify, others I've been able to find online, but they had no known meaning, and others I've found no where. If any of you know anyone well-versed in Russian pre-WWII markings, or if you yourself know, give me a buzz.

Thanks, Brothers.

Lol @ Olga. Bit too brutish for me. I'm looking for something that has beauty, but also a fire. This gun is a blast to shoot, and has good power to it.

Thanks for the input, I like the options coming about. The search continues!

How about going the other direction: My family has always purchased Kimber pistols and been pretty big fans. Well, my sister just had a baby over Thanksgiving and she named her Kimberly and going with Kimber for short.

Not a female name but why not Balabushka. I hear it improves the hell out of your shot.

Just because they're inexpensive does not mean they aren't nice guns. A little extra money and they can be quite nice.

I named mine Lisa

Cheers :ccool:

Many thanks for all the comments and suggestions (especially Dwight up there reminding me of my inherent poverty, lol)

I've chosen to go with the name Nakkita, meaning "Unconquered" or "Unconquerable."

Zip, I'm especially interested in what you've done with your Mosin. That ring-like adaptation at the back would make working the safety MUCH easier (thing's a bitch, but I guess Russians didn't really agree with the concept to begin with, lol). What did you do to it (in entirety) and roughly how far back did it put you? Thanks!

The stock is an ATI composite, I think that set me back about $80.
The scope that's on it in the picture is a little NCStar long relief, since replaced, but it was $40 I think.
The scope mount was something I picked up at a gun show here in town. It's actually a tri rail, little over kill but cool none the less. That was $60 (had to haggle they wanted $90)
The ring safety is a custom job from a guy I found on the internet, I can dig back through some old email and see if I can find his contact info for you if you'd like. It certainly makes setting it less dangerous to the fingers.
Can't really tell but it has a bent bolt handle from the same guy that did the safety. He does really good work, I think for both was about $120.
The strap is cheap $10 one from Wally World.
And a $40 bi-pod from Wally also.
Pieced it all together over about 9 months as I found accessories I liked.

The stock wooden stock, if yours is in good condition, are actually really nice. I sanded all the thick ass lacquer off of it and used tung oil to condition the wood once the lacquer was all off. It will sweat out some the first couple times you shoot. After that though I prefer the wood stock to the composite one.

Let me know if you need any help workin on her, I'll fill ya in on anything I can remember.

Cheers :ccool:
