The fixed cost is the minimum dollar amount under a pound. After that, the cost varies by how much it weighs.

I always pick 15 ounces and use Priority. The benefit is you get free tracking and it's about $4.60 versus the $5.45 when you have it done at the PO. Plus you can just dump and run when you prepay. You don't have to wait in the lines only to speak to some grumpy bitch.

What do you mean you just leave it in the mailbox?

Do they bill you for the cost, or do you have the pre-paid setup from the USPS website?

All Priority Mail is a fixed about for 15 ounces, as long as you use a Priority Mail box or envelope it doesn't matter what size it is.

Pre-paid in any form basically gets you free delivery confirmation, as far as cost goes, but the added convenience of being able to mail the package when you want to is nice (from work, swing through the Post Office). In some states you can even live it in your mailbox or use a blue drop-box, but the cut-off on weight is usually 14 or 15 ounces on that too, for security purposes.

For heavy items, the "Flat Rate" boxes are the way to go. You can save a lot of coin that way if you're sending items that are small but heavy.

Click & Ship USPS. Go online, pay with credit card, print the shipping label, place in mail box. Easy stuff.
