Gents, looking to get a garbage disposal for my kitchen. I've been looking on Home Depot and it seems there is a plethora of them with decent reviews, ranging anywhere from 1/2HP to 1HP. I would like to keep my spending in the $100ish range, but I am willing to go up to $200ish if someone can explain to me why I may need to do so. I don't want to have to replace the thing in 3 years.

This is the one I am currently considering: http://www.homedepot.com/p/InSinkErator-Badger-900-3-4-HP-Continuous-Feed-Garbage-Disposal-Badger-900/203144513

Badger 5 best bang for the buck. I'm a plumber and I put it in my house. Will take a beating and still work

Thoughts on the one that I linked? it has the extra 1/4 HP and is only an extra $20 or so because it's on sale

I can't speak to the return-on-investment with the expensive models as opposed to the cheaper ones. However, I've had two Insinkerators -- one in my old house that lasted 7 years and another in my current house that is now 10. Still running like a champ! Take good care of it and it will take care of you. Electric motors in general tend to be pretty reliable in my experience, as long as they're not running a compressor (i.e., a fridge).

I put this one in last year. It has been great. pretty much chews up anything I put in it. Its also still as quiet as the day I installed it (its actually pretty quiet, no joke). I just got through with a kitchen reno and installed it on the new sink. It is well worth the price.

Not sure if you live in a house with city water and sewage or not but, I've been told by master plumbers if you live in a house with a septic system you should not use a garbage disposal. This was many years ago when I was looking to do the same thing so technology and that way of thinking might have changed. Good luck, brother.

Not sure if its a gimmick or not but I got one that is "septic safe". Not really sure what the difference is supposed to be between it and a regular one though. Been running it for about nine years with out any septic issues.

That's good to hear. I think you would have had some issues in 9 years if it wasn't meant to be used on a septic system. I might have to do some more research. It's been probably 20 years since I looked into it.

From a master plumber..... me. Disposals and septic still not ideal food particles take longer to break down and digest in the tank. That being said I see no reason if used smart and sparingly why it would not work.

Thanks for the advice! we have our tank pumped and cleaned every five years with no issues what so ever and would like to keep it that way.
