So, based on the 2 I posted today in the 'today's smoke' section and a general observation.... Also, I'm a noob when it comes to really paying attention to what I find to be a good-great stick so take this with a large grain of salt.
I find that the more mainstream brands have a decent taste at some point but then get a very vegetal/overly spicy flavor that dominates and really puts me off. Is this common? I think it's the vegetal flavors that put me off the most. Sometimes it's right off the bat, sometimes it's midway through.
As an example from tonight. The RyJ Media Noche started with lots of green veggies and spice but then smoothed out and I go down to about 1.75" before I put it down. The Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 50 Year started great then became overly vegetal/spicy/funky and I stopped after about 2.5" and couldn't finish it.
I've found that I like a very balanced flavor all the way through. I don't mind a full flavor cigar but don't want a completely one dimensional smoke either. Some that hit the spot for me are the maduro RomaCraft and LP9's. I also loved the Nub 358 Cameroon. I found the Illusion Ultra OP 9 nice but mild. I've had a few Padron Family reserve that, while good, weren't mind blowing but I'd buy again (had a few of the 50 yr versions and the 85 yr).
If anyone has some guidance I'd love to hear it.
