Just rescue one. I have no idea why people see the need to buy puppies from breeders anymore when there are thousands, if not millions, of animals that need homes. Our rescue is the best dog we've ever had.

Or try GSGSR.org. for a rescue. They are in New Jersey but since you are in eastern P.A. it won't be an issue. We rescued a fantastic shepherd from them and they are an amazing group of people helping in enormous ways. That's the way to go imo. Good luck.

We had an awesome German Shepherd that we got from a local Shepherd rescue. Because our daughter was only 4 months old, the last thing we wanted was a puppy. We filled out or compatibility form, and we were matched with a beautiful Shepherd who had been in a family with small children. The family had to move, and was forced to give her up....Perfect match for us, and a wonderful opportunity to give a great dog a new home.

What everyone else has said so far . Unless you have a specific reason for buying from a breeder (papers because you intend to show, preferred genetics for working/tracking, etc.) rescues are the way to go. Plus I generally distrust breeders. Not saying they're all bad, but I've seen to many people get dogs with bad genetics from breeders that are irresponsibly churning out puppies. If you go the rescue route you'll save some money versus buying a puppy and can help a dog that needs a loving home. You can then use some of that money you saved to get him/her set up for a years worth of routine medical expenses and preventatives.
