Sharper Image had become the poster child of the gift card meltdown.

I guess with their increasing popularity they are causing economists to have to wait to recalculate and forecast Christmas season sales since the redemption of a card can trail several weeks/months into the new year and therefore skew the numbers.

I don't agree with the additional fees and add ons from the retailers. I also think that redeemers should be elevated to a class above Unsecured Debt in the bankruptcy hierarchy.

I've heard of that, but mine have always been used right away to prevent me from posing it.
