Anyone have an opinion on the advantages/disadvantages of these respective firearms ...this will be my first polymer pistol and I normally shoot 1911 .45 pistols ...the obvious answer is try them both out at the range but there may be other considerations I haven't thought of...appreciate any input//thanks

Depends on what you're going to do with it. For CCW I rely on my G27 first (it's also my BUG when on duty) and then my G23. The G22 is a little long in the handle to under a sport coat IMO. My duty weapon is the G22 and it works very well. In fact, all the patrol officers in my PD carry 22's so we can easily use each others mags/ammo. A G21 fully loaded with 13 rounds and then another 26 rounds on your belt gets heavy after awhile too. I've been through 1000's of rounds and have never (I'm knocking on wood right now) never even had a jam/stovepipe or other malfunction. But then again I don't shoot reloads either, just new, brand name ammo.

However, the G21 is my bedroom weapon - more stopping power vice speed and if there is someone in my house, at night, I just want to knock them down whereever I hit them.

My SA's are a 1911 Operator (not for duty carry) and a SA XD-M .40.

Again, it depends on what you will use them for, but either one will be a good addition to your collection.

stay safe,

I formerly believed that I wanted a .45 because of the knock-down power, but a seasoned LEO put it to me this way: "If I shoot you in the foot with a .40, it'll hurt just as bad as a .45" and he's right, size is relative when molten metal is being passed through your body and adrenalin is pumping rampant through your veins... What's important is not caliber, its shot placement; any reasonable caliber will be effective if you hit a vital organ. So, your best bet is hit the range, wear yourself out and tweak your nerves and hit the range again with the weapon you're most comfortable with and is most reliable (Glock is the right place for this).

That being said, the .40 is slightly smaller, easier to carry, and you get more accuracy and better range with it as opposed to the .45. The G23 is slightly smaller than G22 and same caliber. To piggy-back on what Smokey said, it depends on your use, if you're carrying on a duty belt, I'd carry the G22. If under a sport coat, G23 and if concealed go with G27. I think .40 is the ideal caliber though.

YMMV

I've had my G22 for years, it's been awesome. Time for new sights though, the Tritium is finally faded out (I've been putting that off for a year or so now...:shame:)

I bought a bad batch of reload ammo, that produced a few ejection issues, but swapping back to good ammo cleared that right up.

I did have the trigger worked on, and lightened (to 3½ lb pull), and extend mag and slide releases put on it not long after I bought it.

I went with the Glock in .40 (mod 23) over the .45 after feeling the grip. The mod 21 with it's double stack magazine did not fit my hands very well. Something you may want to check out if you have smaller hands.

Thanks bros for all the input ....and well, after much thought and a few trips to the range I went with a Springfield Armory XD in a 45 ACP .....it just felt so similar to me in my hand to my 1911 but in a polymer.......now for that dammed 10 day waiting period ...To Hell with California....its times like these I miss Texas...

I was able to shoot a full size XD .45 at the range and thought it was a nice shooting pistol. I also liked the slimmer 1911 type grip. I think you will be happy with that decision.

Let us know how it performs at the range.

I have a G21 and also a .40 G23. I think the .40 is a better cartridge overall; more energy on target, higher velocity, higher capacity, JHP's can expand to a .75 inch diameter.

If you go with the G21 make sure it is the "SF" model, which stands for short frame, It makes the grip much better. It is my bedside gun, with 13 rounds of Remington golden Saber 185 gr. +P's. IMO the .45 has less recoil, more like a soft push.
