Internet Message Access Protocol

Most people access their email via POP which requires you to download your mail from the server before you can read it, sort it, etc. IMAP lets you do such things on the mail server side.

a very basic explanation is what you do on one device is reflected on another. for example, if you check your email on your phone the message will show up as read when you login to the web interface. if you delete the message via outlook it gets deleted on the web as well. with pop the message will still show as new online
