Hi, I am Griz from the south western part of Pennsylvania, actually Somerset county. I was just goofing around on the net looking at different cigar sites and came across this site. After some looking around, it seems like a really nice place to hang out, so I registered. I have been enjoying cigars for over 10 years, my real favorites are CAO Brazillia, 5 Vegas A series, CAO MX2, for my cheaper yardgars I keep a lot of Bahia Maduro, El Mejor espresso, La Perla maduro that's about it. I just bought a 500 count humidor and have been having some trouble getting the humidity up to power and that was a little bit of my Internet search that lead me to the BOTL forum. I also enjoy 18th century reenacting and I make recreation engraved powder horns which I sell at shows and through an art gallery in Gettysburg, pa.
Hope I didn't bore you all too much. Glad to be here.

Wow, you guys are fast. Thanks for the welcome.
I got an " indulgence" 500 count from cigars internationals web site.
I just can't seem to get above 62% humidity. I have 4 jars of humi-care in the bottom and I did the salt in a zip lock Baggie to check my hygrometers and marked them, so I know how much to add to get the right reading. It just seems stuck at 62. I bought this one because I was tired of the stack of 7 small count humidor a sitting around. I still have 3 of the 50 count type. One is in my downstairs, one in my office at work and one at my cabin in the woods.

It is never big enough. I say try going with Heartfelt beads roughly for 500 cigars you need to go with roughly 10oz of them and that should roughly cover all the cigars in there and it is very low maintenance. You can try giving it a try and I promote it and alot of the guys here do too. You can also try throwing some boveda packs in there. I use 69RH boveda packs with 65rh heartfelt and it is perfect for me.

Cheers,
JM

Welcome to BOTL from NJ!

Are you using an analog or digital hygrometer? It sounds like you're using analog, and I really suggest investing in a digital - accuracy is much better. Could be your problem.

Actually, I have a half dozen digital and doing the salt test, everyone of them was off. So I wrote the difference on each of them so I know what the right reading is and it has been averaging 62.

Hey Griz!

:welcome: from Minnesota :waving:

Not sure how well you seasoned your humidor before you started using it but that may be the problem. You really need to let the wood inside get up to correct humidity or you will be fighting low RH for awhile. If you already seasoned it well you may be facing one of the following problems:

- A poor seal- Check to make sure your new humidor is sealing properly. There are some wonderful things that can be done with weatherstripping if this is the issue.

- Empty space - The humidity in your humidor is a combination of your humidifier, your humidor and your cigars. If you only have 200 cigars in a 500 count humidor you are more than likely going to have low RH issues. This is the same reason that am empty refigerator or freezer is harder to keep cold. Get some empty cigar boxes or chunks of spanish cedar from your local B&M and fill the space if possible. That should help stabilize things at a higher level.

-impatience - One of the problems that used to plague me was checking my humidity level 4 times a day. Every time I opened the lid I let dry outside air in and never let it get to where it should be.

Not sure which issue you are facing but one of these (or something else entirely) may be causing the problem.

...
I think he is asking you to smell his thumb...all I can get.

Welcome to botl!!! Would not suggest smelling his thumb!
That's hilarious, I love a good sense of humor.
We used to have a teacher WAY back in high school and when he substituted he would always take us for trail walks behind the school, as soon as we got out of sight from the school he would always ask who had a can of snuff so he could bum a rub and then he would say, " smoke em if ya got em boys " your handle just reminded me of Jim..... Made me smile, those were better days when things were like that, so many years ago....
