Hello All,
Have been lurking for some time, but decided to join up as I have some questions about long term storage. (I'll ask the questions over the next couple of weeks.) BOTL looks to be a great place, and look forward to catching up on some old post and visiting with you all.
Have been puffing on cigars for decades (I'm in my mid 50s), but have never gone in for the high priced sticks that get so talked about. Smoke on average one a day. Nothing I like more than to have a good smoke at a good price. For me, that is $2.50 or less per cigar these days. Sure, I've splurged when I see an offer that looks like a deal. Nothing I hate worse though than finding that I have wasted money on a bundle of inexpensive, but unsmokeable yard gars. My fingers are not so much stained from tobacco as they are from the ink squeezed out of tightly clutched currency. I have finally come to accept the fact that the days of buying a box of A.Fuentes for under $20 are gone for good......<sigh>.
I find my taste in cigars change all the time. Kinda like pizza maybe? Have never been a fan of any of the oily leafs, and probably have more med to mild sticks than anything. Have never been impressed by the few Cubans I've had, but maybe I've just haven't found the right one yet. Do find that I am drawn to the Dominicans over and over. Not much of an experimenter either. Would rather enjoy a known good cigar than try to discover a new one. Am also guilty of being side-tracked to the point that I've (gasp) let my humidors run empty.
Well, they're not empty now. Over the last month or so, I've been ordering sticks I've never tried before, but that are highly recommended. My intention is to have 600-700 cigars in storage by the time that stupid new tax takes effect. Have a little more than 400 now, so deciding on the rest shouldn't be a problem. My thinking was try one as soon as it comes off the UPS truck, and if I like it, order a box or two. Lots of good, moderately priced cigars out there these days. No way I can try them all.... wouldn't want to. Just hope to find an assortment that I like enough to keep in storage for a couple of years.
Also want to extend a big thank you to members who have helped me while I was lurking, and an even bigger thank you in advance for help in the future.
Tom
