I live about an hour and a half inland in southern Mississippi. When Katrina came through three years ago today, it brought everyone to their knees. I was without power, phone (including cell phone), and water for 11 days. Now they say Gustav is coming and all paths point it almost the same as Katrina. Everyone around here is still a little gun shy to say the least. I ran to town today to buy an air conditioning unit from a parts distributer and they said they had sold 25 generators since they opened this morning. I talked with a guy there buying a generator and he said that all of the major stores(Walmart, Kroger, etc) are out of all water and non perishables. It is already crazy here, I hate to see how it goes when this thing gets closer!!!

Crazy. I hope all goes well. Be sure to stock up a Butane refills for your lighters, would be terrible to not be able to light a cigar for the next 11 days.

My borther lives in Hattiesburg and he says the same thing. he said it started yesterday, people buying everything in site. Fortunatley for him he has all that stuff from last time...excpet for the food and perishables and stuff, but he grows a garden so that'll help, as long as it ain't blowed away.

I heard the news say Yes, it's a hurricane, but it's not Katrina.

but i can totally understand the gunshy part of it.

Good luck to you.

A couple gas stations in Jackson already sold out of gas. And hell, that's about an hour and a half from you!

Don't get me wrong, I think it is wise to prepare, but I would not evacuate unless I lived right on the coast. I think that some people get a little over zealous and that the truth is they really dont know where a huricane will end up until 24 hours before landfall. I am ready for this storm, but I agree that it will be no Katrina. However, if it hits anywhere close to New Orleans, I believe the damage will be the same as Katrina because I do not think the levees will hold. All we can do is wait and see. Everyone in the path needs to stay safe and use good common sense to see this thing through.
