OK I need a little help please. I have a plain Krups Grinder to grind up my whole beans. In years past I just put some in and ground them untill they were done since I was using a drip cofee maker.

I am now using a Coffee Press, so how long or how many pulses should I do to get a rough blend so I do not clog up the press and have too much slug in the coffee.

Thanks for the advice.

Here is what kind of blender I have now.

I'm no expert, but I know that you want a 'course' grind for a press... I use the same thing & just go by 'eye' between coffee/espresso...

you really need to upgrade to a burr grinder, this way you can set the grind level. I have this one

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JLFLXQ/ref=ox_ya_oh_product"]Amazon.com: KitchenAid KPCG100NP Pro Line Burr Coffee Grinder, Nickel Pearl: Kitchen & Dining[/ame]

you will get consistency nad an even grind. that grinder you have is a blade that just chops and will create uneven bean grind.

Sorry, but I have no idea how many pulses you are going to need, but you definitely need a coarser grind than drip. The holes in the screen are larger and you want to keep as much of your grounds under the screen as possible. The grounds that get through will make your brew more bitter. This is where the conical burr grinder helps. It is going to produce a more consistant size with less of the fines. You really will see a huge difference in your press pot coffee with a better grinder.

Anymore, you can find decent burr grinders for not much money. Like has already been said, a way more consistent grind, whether for press or espresso machine.

I think you need to do a bit of trial and error and figure out how course it needs to be for best flavor and not leaving too much residue in the cup. I don't know how many pulses because I use a burr grinder which is nice because you can set it and forget it. When you can upgrade to a burr grinder, do it.

A burr grinder simply makes better coffee. I have a Breville BCG450XL, it works well.

I'm have a blade grinder myself right now however mine has settings for # of cups and coarseness. I know, I know... I need a burr grinder!

When making a 6-cup pot in my press I use the "4 cups/coarse" setting on my grinder. It grinds for about 4-5 seconds and that seems to do pretty well for the most part. My suggestion would be to start at about 4 seconds and adjust from there.

Jeezuz...I've been a coffee snob for years and I didn't know about the burr grinder. I have french pressed my coffee for at least ten years...love strong coffee and pressing it makes it so much yummier...

Damn it...now I need to buy a new toy!
