How to Get Rid of Hiccups

</B>The cause and function of hiccups has baffled medical practitioners since the time of Hippocrates. Although no one has figured out the exact science behind these "abrupt diaphragmatic contractions," we have come up with a few home remedies that might be able to help.
Steps: 1. Swallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to three more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary. 2. Gulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work. 3. Eat a piece of dry bread slowly. 4. Breathe in and out of a paper bag. Do not use a plastic bag under any circumstances, and don't do this longer than 1 minute. 5. Gargle with water (see 'How to Gargle'). 6. Repeat the above steps until your hiccups stop.
Tips:
Keep in mind that hiccups can be caused by eating too fast and subsequently swallowing a lot of air or drinking too much alcohol.
Warnings:
See a doctor if you have severe pain, if your hiccups last longer than a day (or 3 hours in the case of a small child), or if they started after you took a prescription medication.

My sure fire hiccup cure:

Pinch your shoulder until it hurts. This works because the nerves in your shoulder are the same nerves that control your diaphragm.

Get a glass of water and drop a lit match in it. Drink it, hiccups gone immediately.

That sucks that he died the year after the hiccups went away. What was his reaction when he noticed they stopped!? Probably went out drinking.

Hiccups remind me of drinking, so I'd just as soon keep a good case of them...at least until I can get somewhere for another drink!

I've seen a variation of this work repeatedly. First you exhale and then you must drink the water slowly, no pauses, and pinch your nose to insure that you do not try to breath.

Supposedly it works by exercising the diaphragm.

I subscribe to the sugar rememdy, myself...except the way I learned it, you don't just swallow the sugar. You let it dissolve in your mouth. I've never had to take more than two doses.

Another cure that seems to work well, if you don't have any sugar handy, is to swallow three times (no water needed) while holding your breath...and pinching your nose, if necessary to keep yourself from taking any breath whatever. I don't know about most folks but for me, that third swallow is tough. Works pretty good, though...the few times I've tried it.

You have one of your friends hold a gun to your head and say, "if you don't stop with the hiccups, I am going to pull the trigger".....works every time!
Leave it to the cowboy :help: :eyequiver
