Humi Capacity?

My wife bought me my first humi for Christmas. It's a 120 count desktop. I have an order of beads coming from Hearfelt, a Hygro coming from CS, and a couple samplers on their way totaling 36 sticks.

Here's my question. Everything I've read says to keep your humi stocked at least 75% full. I know my humi won't actually hold 120 sticks, but I am still going to be well below 50% full. What issues can I expect to come from this? It seems like it might be more difficult to keep a constant rh, but are there any other negative consequences of a more than half empty humi?

I have never heard of any, or experienced any problem with a less than 3 quarter filled humi. I always thought the rule was no more than 75% full, and only then will you have problems.

eh, the XL Savoy's I use are 150 Count and if I don't keep them AT LEAST half full, keeping a steady read is a daily battle...

Your humidity will not stay constant. If it is 75% full it will stay where it needs to be. Out side of that there are no other issues.

Either buy more cigars or put in a cigar box to take up space. If you don't have a cigar box.. go to your B&M and they should have some empties for ya. I'd send you one if I had any to spare.

That's what I alway told my customers. The theory was that when there was more "space" than "mass" it was alot harder to maintain the proper humidity. Buy more cigars or get a smaller humidor.

Beads will be able to keep up when 50% filled or even less as long as you order enough and don't keep it open for too long.

Im sure Ron will be by soon enough. But what matters most is what brand of humi you have. If you have a quality humidor youll be able to get away with less cigars and the beads will keep up. If you have a cheapo it wont matter if its half, three quarters or full.
Your going to have problems. Do the dollar bill test and see what you have as far as quality.

It is all about the situation. Beads will help a lot, quality of humidor and if you seasoned it correctly.

Basically your cigars are going to hold humidity so if you keep your humidor at 65% then the cigars should be 65%. The more things 65% then the less issues you will have with unstable humidity.

O and one negative thing about a half filled humi is there is room for more which means more purchasing.

I just picked up a 500 ct and have 80 sticks in it tops. Holding steady 65% with a Cigar Oasis. I believe jolietfire means shut a dollar bill in the lid and see how hard it is to pull out. Also if its seasoned well the wood should be swelled a bit to make a tighter seal.

Lots of good info above ky7le! My local B&M lets me search through their empty boxes which I end up buying a few of each time I go. I take the cedars spacers (wooden blocks) out of a few of them and use them to fill gaps in my humi. They serve a dual purpose; they take up space and introduce more spanish cedar into the mix.
