Virginia has passed, for the first time, the use of a crossbow during archery season. People seemed to be split on this...some are elated at the thought of a new weapon to be used while others argue that you are not truly an "archer" when using a crossbow. Same arguement as they guys that use traditional muzzleloaders/flintlocks and rag on the guys that have the state of the art inline, scoped blackpowder rifles.

I am an archer but am going to hold back my opinion until a read a few from you guys. Not that I will change mine...I just don't want to influence yours.

Discuss your thoughts on the topic of the crossbow being permitted during archery season.

I for one, don't see a problem with allowing persons to use crossbows during the archery season...As for persons using crossbows not being true archers...Well, I'm not really sure how to approach that one, it would depend on ones definition of archer I suppose....I could say that anybody that didn't go to the forest, cut a branch, and then kill an animal to use its sinews and intestines to make their own bow is not an archer...

More power to 'em. If you prefer the bow and arrow then go for it. I think it defintely takes more skill to be accurate with a bow.

What Todd said. I've never fired a crossbow, but would like to. I've never hunted with a Bow, but did really enjoy target shooting (with a Hunting Bow) for a while back in my younger days. I will say I'd rather have those who aren't going to take the time to practice use a crossbow than standard bow and arrow.

All that being said, it's hunting no matter which way you cut it. If you enjoy it, then that's great. This should allow a few more folks to enjoy the sport.

The only people allowed to use a crossbow here is people who's disability prevents them from being able to use a traditional bow. I have a friend who used to hunt with a bow until he was in an accident, now the crossbow is the closest he can get to still having a similar experience.
