For some stupid reason, I've always been fascinated by severe storms. My dad was convinced that if reincarnation does exist, I died in a hurricane in one of my past lives. Any other weather geeks around?

Looks like we have a storm churning down in the tropics that is forecast to be on the Florida coast in about 5 days....The current track takes it pretty much directly over Haiti too, which is obviously bad news for that nation.

Anyway, a couple sites I use to track the weather are:

The National Hurricane Center Pretty much THE source for up to date information.

StormPulse Great maps, and a cool feature that shows all the different models and forecast positions that the NHC uses to form their best guess.

Intellicast Best Radar Images I've found, no text or information on the storms at all though

editing to add useful links posted by others as well

Crown Weather - Seems to be a site that compiles data from several sources. Well laid out. Thx swingerofbirches

Spaghetti Models -- Tons of graphics here. Thx swingerofbirches

Fascinated by big storms, not to the point of geekiness though. Love to sit on the porch when storms blow through. Love big lightning and thunder. Keep an eye on hurricanes because of interests/ investments on the SC coast.

Hurricanes pack one hell of a punch on the open ocean. Sea story- We left port to dodge one a few years ago, the surface ships haul ass to get away, submarines just go out and submerge. Even at >300ft the effects are not pleasant, we were still taking 15 degree rolls then calm as the eye passed then rocking and rolling. But nothing is better than watching a huge storm blow in and seeing the lightning and intensity build as it goes by.

i pay attention to it, when it directly affects me and my family. In florida we have amazingly good drainage, and from being scared(not hit) so many times we have good preparation, all the local gas stations and grocery stores have generators. all homes built past 1994 have to have some form of shutters, i myself have steel shutters on the bottom floor, and accordion shutters upstairs, all but 3 upstairs i can close in 15 minutes from the inside of the house. preparation is the key.

Well, Irene became a named storm this afternoon. Still early of course, but forecasts are putting it at the southern tip of florida as a tropical storm or weak hurricane by Thursday night.

As an avid fisherman and hunter I'm pretty much a total weather freak. During duck season especially my TV basically lives on the weather channel, I listen to the weather band on my VHF handheld about 10 times a day and check 2 or 3 different websites. Yeah, obsessive I know, but being on the water in below freeing temps often in small boats I choose to live by knowing exactly what is happening and when.

Living in Fort Myers, I am a total geek during cane season. I am on various websites trying to figure out the various models.

Being in the emergency services field, I wish more people were like this. Can't tell you the number of times people call in stuck in the snow on some back road with an 1/8th of a tank of gas with nothing more than their t-shirt and jeans on. People just don't think.

Actually, reminds me of an article I thought was bang on that I read a few days ago. It was written by a meteorologist in response to the governer calling the collapse of that stage at the State Fair a "fluke" event.

--edit, they seemed to have toned it down a LOT since I read it. Basically said at the time that it's a shared responsibility between the organizers AND the people in attendance, and that neither side was blameless.

Makes a lot of sense....hmm, I live in a place they call 'Tornado Alley'. There's been severe thunderstorm watches and warnings posted. I have these here tickets to an outdoor concert, where I have to stand in close proximity to a 60ft tall steel stage rigging. Maybe I'll pass on this one...

NHC just put out their 11pm briefing - and it contained an interesting factoid I thought.

OF NOTE...THIS IS THE THIRD EARLIEST TO HAVE NINE NAMED STORMS FORM
IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN...BEHIND 2005 AND 1936
.
2005, of course, being the year that spawned Hurricane Katrina...

I never understood how people can live in places well known for hurricanes. I was once in Miami after the hurricane season and was speachless at the devastation it had caused. How can insurances cover the loss? Here in europe people struggle with insurances when there is floods, they have to prove they didnt build their house on a land known for floods...

I just hope this thing stays weak before it hits this area. I am prepared, but after hurricane charley, I never want to be without power for a week in the summer heat again.

I understand, but at the same time people have to live somewhere. If it's not a hurricane, then it's a tornado, wildfire, flooding, etc.

Updated track at 5pm shifted the long term forecast somewhat to the east which is probably a good sign, however projected landfall as a strong TS or cat 1 hurricane pretty much showing Miami/Ft Lauderdale in the crosshairs
