So I played in a 4 man best ball scramble for a charity last Friday. Collectively we shot a 65 on a fairly difficult course so all in all a good round. But wait, one of the sponsors "Pro Golf" had a demo day set up at the range so we all had to go try the new clubs. I picked up the new Callaway FTi square driver 9 degree loft and hit it three times. The shortest drive carried 220 and all three were straight as an arrow. So my question is, If I drop 5 bills on a stupid golf club will it cease to ever hit a straight drive again? I always hit somebody else's clubs better than the ones in my bag.

Club is kinda goofy looking, but man you can knock the snot outta golf ball.

I'm a tinkerer, so building up a new club when I want to try something different is part of the fun of golf for me. I refuse to spend that damn much on any driver. I can live with 20 or so fewer yards for a fraction of the price.

I can hit pretty consistently ~200 yds with my $50 driver that I built from Golfsmith. With better technique, I'd guess that I could get another 50 or so with it.

It's common knowledge once you actually pay for a golf club, it automatically loses 30 yrds and the ability to hit a ball straight. Just tell the club it isn't paid for, it's just on loan.

The more you pay the better you look .... LOL

My buddy is a golf pro and he still plays with his 3 wood he used in high school. He is 40 this year.

I've been hitting my Titleist 975J for years now. I'm consistent in the 300 range. I can't seem to find anything I can hit any better. At least not enough to justify that kind of quid. I was always a WarBird fan in the early years of that line but it has fallen off.

Also, I have an adverse reaction to club heads akin to clown shoes.

My rule of thumb is: if the club is larger than my head I don't need it.

Man, that thing IS weird looking.

I like my Adams driver that I got about four years ago. Before that I had been using the same driver I used when I was like 16.

A lot of it is in your head and Charlie is probably right.

I droped a pretty penney on my driver and it looks great in my bag, b/c that is where it stays. I take it out on the range but never on the course b/c i am so much more consistent with my 3 wood. I will give up the yardage if i can keep it in the fairway.

I play with a guy who always gets the new stuff. I think that kind of dumb, but gives me the option of purchasing nice clubs that are slightly used at great prices when the new ones come out. I don't think he has pick this up yet.

The sound that that club makes when making contact with a ball reminds me of playing baseball with aluminum bats... 'PING'... I cant handle it..

Tough decision. I have the Callaway Big Bertha II and like it a lot, couldn't hit the new Callaway FTi at all, but the Nike Sasquatch square driver I hit the hell out of. I'm damn close to pulling the trigger on that sucker. :starrylov

I kinda thought it sounded like the tinny Gong at the Chinese restaurant. I tried out the new Taylor made also. I also want to see the Nike Sasquatch or Bigfoot or Bigass something like that. Cobra also has a 460 cc driver that looks like a flattened bowling ball on a stick. These new drivers are just obscenely huge.

Looks are certainly paramount when choosing a club. For whatever reason I don't mind the look of it at all, seeing it in magazines, I thought I'd hate it, but holding it, it was fine. The sound really leaves something to be desired, but the results just blew away any negative thoughts I had about the sound. I mean I hit 25 balls with it and don't think any of them landed more than 15 yards from the first, it was deadly accurate, long and had a great ball flite. Only problem was, I had a hard time working the ball, so that was a bit of an issue.

I've been hitting a Cobra Speed Pro S offset for a year or so now. It gave me back the 25 yards age took away and I'm on the short stuff more than I ever was before. Bought the demo I hit on the range, got a 1/3 off discount.
