Did not go into work today, woke up with very sore ankle, sore big toe, and a little swollen, could barely walk. Talked to my father, who has live with gout off and on for 20+ years, said the symptoms are what he has been through.

Going to the doctor later this morning to find out.

Sounds like it might be an early day down at the lounge having a smoke or two.

Hope you can shake it off soon! Never had it, but I have a couple of co-workers that have battled it from time to time. They eat canned cherries to relieve the symptoms... :dunno:

Gout is a deposit of where uric acid crystallizes in a joint right? I know of someone that ended up with gout after my wedding reception. I guess you can get it from drinking to much?

I have gout. You don't just get it from drinking too much. It comes from build up of uric acid in the blood, which is due to poor removal by the kidneys. Uric acid is a by product of breaking down protein. And, yes the symptom is the swelling and pain due to it crystallizing in a joint (from what I understand, usually in the big toe). If you have gout, you're supposed to limit protein intake, and reduce alcohol consumption, especially bbeer. Also, it can get triggered anytime, there is no real pattern to it appearing.

Well, with the biggest loser contest going on, I haven't been drinking, but my protein intake is up. Thank God, I still can have a cigar.

I had gout some time ago lived with it for the longest time thinking my metatarsal had dropped thus causing the pain in my big toe and never realised how swollen my big toe was compared to the other foot went to see the doctor who told me to limit my red meat intake considering how I only eat red meat if its a steak that wasn't an issue other than that cut down on the fried stuff and started having some veggies with my meals and hardly notice pain anymore.

Formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, yes; but also hereditary factors, excesive drinking, a diet high on proteins and carbs with a sedentary life never help with it.
Take about 20 cherries a day (Fresh if possible), as well as a hefty ammount of vitamin C (Orange/lime/lemon juice, pine needle tea,...) and follow the medic's indications. Hope ye get better soon, mate!

I'd say welcome to the club but having gout just sucks! While the pills work there are a few natural things that will help. Go to a health food store and ask for concenrated black cherry juice, it has to be the 100% natural stuff. Take two or three tablespoons of the raw concentrait every morning and night, its not the greatest tasting stuff but it does work. Drinking 100% natural cherry juice also helps.

My buddy had it, and he stopped drinking beer and it went away. He was a 6 pack a day guy before, and more on the weekend

While I don't disagree with that statement, I don't totally agree. I have had gout since high school. While in high school and college, while playing sports and working out a great deal, I still had bouts of gout. Actually, the worst bout I had lasted over a week. I was pretty active at the time, working out and running at least 4 miles or more, or biking at least 20 miles, almost everyday. The attack actually started in the middle of a workout.

That's why I said "help". Imagine how it would've been if ye never exercised...

I know that this thread is not active anymore, but I just wanted to say that gout is a really terrible condition. It started to disturb me about month ago and I couldn't realize how serious this disease was. At first, I didn't realize what this pain was about, but then its symptoms became worse and worse. So I started to search for any possible information of what these symptoms might be and found its description on this website goutsigns.org. Thus, I realized that I have gout and consulted with a doctor. It appeared that the disease occured due to an often consumption of red meat. Now, I have to follow a spefic diet that excludes red meat and foods with a high level of fructose. I wish I had a better nutrition before as the pain that I felt recently didn't worth my abuse of meat...

I never thought to share it here and hadn't seen this thread before but I have it too. My lifestyle includes EVERY single risk factor AND the hereditary factor as I remember my grandfather limping around with it but with his southern accent I thought gout was just another made up word lol. I've only had two attacks that I know of one last year and one this year in my right big toe. People say they get it in their knees and THAT I cannot even imagine. I haven't seen a dr yet. I've curbed but not eliminated some dietary factors and added more water to my diet. I plan to see a dr and figure out what my uric acid levels actually are at some point. Steak and burgers and shrimp and crab and asparagus and spinach and scallops and salmon and shooting (exposure to lead is a risk factor) and Beer are just too good.

Welcome to club, I've been plagued by random gout flareups in the big toe on my root foot over the last few years. In my case heavy beer consumption tends to lead to it occuring. Thankfully I rarely drink beer. It's brown spirits for this guy!
