Haha, you're done for. Just one piece of advice... Try to buy stuff you want to try, not just stuff that's a good deal. Cbid makes it real easy to load up on junk you'll never smoke.

^^^ This!
I'd say treat it like any other site. What I mean by that is, if you are looking for something in particular, go for it, but know that things can get bid up pretty fast and in the end you may have overpaid. I once spent $300 in a week and never bought a box, just singles, merch and 5ers and shipping! That adds up quick if you are buying stuff like that. I now only use it if I'm looking for a box of something in particular. Way easier on the ol wallet.

true-er words have never been spoken. I used to bid on anything i thought was a good deal. yeah I found some good smokes but also wound up with a lot of stuff that just wasn't my style. Good luck!

I'd echo what other people said. And remember that many times you won't find the best deals on cbid. My advice would be as follows:

1. If you plan on bidding on a decent amount of singles or fivers, then be sure to change your shipping schedule to ship once a week so that you're not wasting money needlessly on shipping out tons of singles. They stop being such a good deal real quick when you tack an extra couple of bucks on per stick in shipping.

2. Bid to get a good deal, and never bid to win. You'll see a lot of suckers bid up items that can be had elsewhere for less and sometimes, much less.

Having said all that there are definitely good deals to be had occasionally so have fun and keep your eyes peeled. Good luck!

I just signed up as well, one thing I learned along time ago, is to only use a prepaid card for my online purchases, and I don't keep any money on it until I'm ready to buy something, and even then, only the amount I need and maybe a little more, goes on the card. If I had a regular credit card, I'd probably be in trouble, lol.

+1 to everything that everyone has said so far.

Probably the best statement so far in this thread is from Master Shake. "Bid to get a good deal, and never bid to win. You'll see a lot of suckers bid up items that can be had elsewhere for less and sometimes, much less"

There are some GREAT deals to be had but you need to be careful. ALWAYS remember.....with great power comes great responsibility.

I created an account, but have managed so far not to use it.....although I am noticing that just like quite a few other situations.... a night of drinks tends to have a serious affect on the ol' cigar purchasing willpower. :halfgrinw

So I took some clips from the above posts (thank you gentlemen) and compiled them. +1 to them all.

-Try to buy stuff you want to try, not just stuff that's a good deal. Cbid makes it real easy to load up on junk you'll never smoke.
-shipping! That adds up quick if you are buying stuff like (singles, 5'vers)
-if you do the shipper savers thing (recommended).... most of the time it's 3.95 +$1.00 for each additional thing. (correct me if I am wrong)
-Open another tab in ur browser and go to cigars internatonal so u can check prices on items u want to bid on
-Bid to get a good deal, and never bid to win. You'll see a lot of suckers bid up items that can be had elsewhere for less and sometimes, much less.
-with great power comes great responsibility. (i am not sure how pertinant to Cbid this is but it is darn useful advice, and could someone tell congress this)
-You'll never see a deal on an LP, Opus or Anejo. (thanks Dave) this is true generally speaking. You know "never say never"

Been there for six years. I'm finally very comfortable bidding there now. It is a particularly dangerous place for a cigar noob who has had little mentoring. There is a TON of cheap cigars available. I know. I tried every one of them. To me, the holy grail was the sub $3 cigar that I enjoy. I sampled literally hundreds of different cheap cigars - many under $2. More than 99% of them, I will never try again. They are marketing masters who write good ad copy and can make any cigar sound mouth-watering, not to mention great 'manipulation' of 'ratings' and 'msrp'.

I'm very glad for the 4 or 5 really cheap cigars that I still buy - for fishing or yard work, etc. But was it worth it? I don't know....maybe I am in a better position to appreciate good cigars now....someone here once said you gotta smoke the crap to appreciate the good---- probably no truth to that except that it makes us crap-smokers feel better.

Nowadays, I am very selective. For example, I like Tats. But, deals on brown and black labels are few and far between. On the other hand, I won a box of ('relatively' unknown) Fausto FT166 yesterday for $94. You'll never see a deal on an LP, Opus or Anejo, but the occasional AF SG will slip to you for less than you can get anywhere else. Where you'll often find the most value is in the merchandise, Quickies (only on auction for less than 24hr), and 'mid-range' stuff like Pepin, AJ Fernandez, etc.

use this web site any time you are bidding on cbid...

www.sloppymcnubble.com/cbid/

it will show you all of the prior auctions for the item you are looking at.. and let you know what an average winning bid is...

then go look at CI and find out what they normally sell the item for...

I pick up excellent deals on cbid all the time... I just make sure that the normal "win" price is well below the normal CI retail price.. and well below the price I can get the same item elsewhere..

For example.. I love the asylum mini coronas... CI retails a box for right at $100... which is about as cheap as I can find them anywhere.... bids between $55-$64 have won the last 5 boxes on Cbid..

So anytime I see a box come available on Cbid.. I put in a max bid of about $60..

and guess what?

about 50% of the time I end up with a box of Asylum Mini Coronas for somewhere between 50-60% of the cheapest retail price I can find anywhere else..

I do the same thing with JdN Antano's.. for whatever reason they go pretty cheap by the box on cbid.. a box of robustos retails for about $95 on CI and most other places.. they almost always go between $65-$70 a box on cbid (confirmed by sloppymcnubble)... so whenever I see a box.. I set my max bid to about $70.. and more often than not I end up winning... and get the box for $25 less than I can anywhere else...
