I'm new to cigars and BOTL

Hello from a new cigar enthusiast.
It's been about a month since I started enjoying the process of finding my palette with cigar. I purchased a combo from stogieboys.com that came with a small 15 cigar desktop humidor and 5 cigars. Because I'm a wine drinker (Cabs), I think my palette is more advanced than most new cigar smokers. The cigars that came in the sample were ok but I wasn’t impressed. I went out and got a RJ 1875 and a Rocky Patel edge. Those were better. I think i burned myself out on watching cigars reviews on you tube. any suggestions for a new cigar enthusiast who likes more medium to full cigars.

Welcome to BotL! My advice is to do some research on here, there are tons of great cigar reviews here to give you an idea. Don't be scared to try some singles from your local B&M. Ask them for their suggestion and develop a relationship with your tobacconist. If you end up smoking a cigar you don't care for, no biggie. Sometimes it's easier to narrow down what you like by discovering what you don't. Above all, enjoy the ride.

From the Rocky Edge, i think it paired well with the wine I was drinking at the time. To me, it had a little spice, nice tobacco flavour, and no over the top nicotine buzz. i think for the RJ 1875, it was alot of peppery spice maybe too much. but it was one of my first cigars i smoked so I think I will try one again maybe a robusto this time not a churchill. I think at this point in my palette i would like to get something that has chocolate, nutty, light spice notes that is full of flavour but not in strength. I cant handle that much nicotine at this point. I read somewhere that more aged tobacco has less nicotine and more flavour. is that correct?

Oh and I tried the Drew Estates KUBA KUBA. It tasted like it was dipped in sweet & low or something. not my cup of tea.

Padron 1964 Anniversary. A bit on the spendy side, but amazing.

But, we're all different, so like others say, try a few and see which ones you like, and what you like about them.

Take some time to explore and try different cigars, there are so many great cigars out there that pair even better with wine. What cigar I might like May not fit within yiur flavor profile and vice versa. A great way to experience the different cigars is by purchasing a single or two at your local b&M or by buying samplers from one of the sponsors of this site,

*Ive been smoking for a while so what I think is mild in nicotine may not be the same for you. Puff slow and if you feel it start to hit back off.
Aging Room F55 - I got distinct chocolaty flavor from this cigar.
Padron 1964 naturals - tend to have more chocolate, vanilla esq. flavors that are subtle and not overpowering.
Tatuaje Miami 10th Anniversary - I remember getting mocha and some pepper from this stick.
RoMa Craft CroMagnon line - red pepper balanced with coffee and mocha flavors.
Illusione Rothchildes is just an all around good stick but some red wines may overpower it. Give it a shot though. Its one of my go to sticks for the last few months.
Its been a while but Davidoff cigars tend to be mild and flavorful. I usually enjoy the Millenniums.

Another suggestion... the cigars you have smoked... find reviews of those cigars from someone that does a lot of review (here or youtube or any other channel). Once you find a review that has a similar pallet see what else they liked and disliked.

Cool. Thanks I will give em a try. is the Padron 1964 real strong? or strength wise full BULL with 2 horns lol?

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but I wouldn't go 2 bull horns on the Padron 1964. Like Z stated, a lot of chocolate and vanilla flavors in it, and I found it be smooth throughout. So good I wanted to light another off the nub, but I had things to do!
Don't smoke it on an empty stomach though, as that's just not a good idea for many cigars.

I too like the "heavy" red wines. Some of my favorites are any Arturo Fuentes maduro sticks, The Jericho hills, aging room f55 as mentioned before. The fun is trying all that is new to you. Welcome from Utah

I really agree with everything these guys are saying. Welcome from Texas! I got into cigars after getting scotch and small batch bourbons, so I know exactly what you're talking about with stepping into the cigar world with a developed palette. The problem I ran into with tobacconists and their recommendations for newer guys- too often, their recommendations for "complex flavor, but not full strength" ended up being "narrow flavor profile". Eventually, I just swung for the fences and tried everything I could find that was highly recommended off of boards and reviews (including what was listed above). This place is amazing for new cigar smokers, everyone will be happy to give recommendations. Little bit of advice though- develop a retrohale while smoking, it'll give you the full flavor of a cigar, and "widen" the profile, so to speak. I didn't find out about it until a couple months after I had started, so I had to double back around and retry a bunch of cigars.
