Yes if you use only distilled water.
I have kept a shot glass in some of my humidors. Just make sure you have a hydrometer in there also to monitor it.

Waste is not the word I would use.

Water only releases humidity into the air... it doesn't absorb it.

The beads are engineered to maintain humiity... meaning they absorb and release moisture as needed to maintain the perfect environment.

Your glass of water could overhumidify and your option is to remove the glass of water, then put it back in and take it out etc... etc...

Beads are worry free, you spritz them with water every so often and they do the work for you.

Here's some more information:

If you put a glass of water in your humidor the humidity could go up to 100% per say. Even if it goes over 70% that's too high IMO.

Beads will take humidity out of the air and also add humidity to the air. So it will keep it around 65% (if you have the 65% beads). It is more of a hassle free way of humidifying.

Honestly, beads were the second best purchase I have ever made in regards to cigars. The first was my vinotemp. I never have issues with humidification anymore. Always between 65-68. Have to wet them every other week or so. They are great.
