Do you folks put your new orders of baccy in the mason jars as soon as you get some new stuff, or do you let it in the can till you are ready to smoke it and transfer it then?
I had one aromatic that I was looking at the other day only to find the seal was broken and dry as a popcorn fart, had to toss the whole tin... it was REALLY dry...

I keep mine in the basement. Humidity is a lite higher there than anywhere in the house. I find that baccy will stay fresh for a long time just in a ziplock. Stuff that I have more than an ounce of usually gets jarred though.

Mine stay in the tins until I have opened it. Currently need to scoop up some more jars as I have a couple open tins that have baccy in them.

As a complete noob, I'm pretty much gonna jar everything. Seems like a safer way to go. I just got some new stuff in last night and a couple of the tins were a little loose. I would rather be safe than sorry I guess, just my .02

mason jar immediately after opening. If it's a square tin I gently pull up on it to see if the seal is actually good or not. If not- I jar it too. the circular metal tins are the best. The sealed cardboard circular tins are debatable.

I do a lot of canning as well, so I have mason jars galore! And that's a good thing since I am so eager and every tin I have is something new that I need to open them to smell and try a bowl. So I can toss the opened tins into a jar and be done.

I am also starting to buy a lot more bulk. There are a few tobaccos now, however, that I am confident in buying a tin or two of and letting them stay unopened. I hope.

Tossed some Aromatic. Heck next Tin you get that you feel is Junk and going to toss it. Consider me your Trash can LOL.

On a different note, Sorry your Tin was bad. I haven't had a Tin of Tobacco go bad on me but then I don't stock my Tobacco. I place an order I get it open it and if there is a lot of one tobacco in bulk in bags. I will move that at times over to Jars. However there are some tobaccos that I buy OTC and keep them in the bag as I smoke them because they need a little drying out anyway. I have started to keep my Old Prince Albert can so I can keep other tobacco in them if needed. Some people feel they don't keep well enough but they are made to keep tobacco just right for me. Last week I just transferred some Smoker's Pride Rum Cured into a empty 12oz can.

The way I do things might not be right for everyone but it works for me. One reason for bag to can is to keep fresh and because I don't like to pack a pipe from plastic bags. If I do I move it to some paper then to pipe. From can, It is big enough to just go from can to pipe.

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...
I'm a big fan of the wide mouth Kerr half pints for smoking out of. They stack nice.
Long term storage, go with the cheapest you can find and keep them in the flats.

@CVAC085 I bought yours from cooking.com but they don't carry them any more. Best place I can find right now is Mills Fleet Farm. $8-something for a dozen of the wide mouth Kerr half pints. And they ship if you don't have one local. And there's usually discounts you can find for there (and other stores) at retailmenot.com for online shopping.
And I think Fleet Farm has a current 10% back gift card promotion right now, too.

How much baccy can you stuff in a 4oz, 8oz, 16oz jar typically?
my favorite jars are these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ball-Collection-Elite-16-Ounce-Mason-Jars-4-Pack/39649503
They are the perfect size for opening a tin(50g) with just a touch of headspace (when full) without having to smash it all in there to fit. It is also great for flakes too since it is wider, yet shallow enough to grab what you need without getting your hand caught/stuck.

just my 2 cents anyway

I will also note, that this online price is higher than what I paid actually in store - much closer to around $6 by me
