Got some O's last month. Things taste good, but they are extremely spongy and have an insanely tight draw on about half we've tried. Is this just because they are fresh? I've read up on them other places, but just checking to see if anyone has had similar experience here.

About how long do they take to ease up and dry out? Answers appreciated!

I would rest (at least some of them) for 4-6 weeks @ 60% rh before trying another one.

Most isoms need serious aging but a lot of botls (including me) have found the J.O's to be enjoyable at a young age... once we get them at a more appropriate humidity.

The lower rh will also discourage another fermentation cycle so that will help them to be more enjoyable sooner.

For long term aging a lot of botls will do a higher % rh say, 70% or higher for several years. The logic is that this will encourage additional fermentation cycles (whence ammonia will be formed and released = sick period = no good for smoking)
This leads right in to the concept of periodically opening the humi/ or box/ or cooler/ or drawer to let ammonia out and fresh oxegen in...
Also I think that temperature control is even more vital at the higher rh%...

Then before smoking they will do a few months (3-6) around 60% rh and viola__!

60% (or lower) has certain advantages, but we must be mindful at that rh to not smoke the gar too quick or we will overheat it. But it will stay lit much easier, produce less tars and reveal different nuances than a wetter schtick...

Mr. Ron (Shuckins) might have a few things to say about that if we can pry his hands off of the bomb-release lever long enough to type something up for us. :)

Best wishes, Dafiddla

AZ,
Bought them early Dec. Been waiting for the sponginess to go away before I try anymore, but the first week a friend and I burnt a few. Good flavor, just tight draw. Thought the draw problems were just due to have wet they were. Tried one yesterday that seemed a bit dryer, still tight draw, deconstructed and the tobacco was extremely wet and stretchy feeling. Gonna leave the remaining bundle for a year I think and try again. I just hope the tight draw is a product of 'engorged' leaf....(sounds like a disease)....and not an overall construction issue. Flavor was incredible at first...now it's very muted and nondistinct, muddled, which leads me to think sick period is on them. So I'm not in a hurry....just curious as to if the draw is because they are still wet and extremely soft.

I had the same experience with mine. I got some shorts and a sampler of other vitolas. Having let them sit for almost 3 months at close to 60%, they were still pretty much plugged (though noticeably less wet). Since that's a HUGE pet peeve of mine, I sent the shorts back. He said he'd take a look at them. Could be a batch was just rolled too tight.

I had a short from a bundle purchased in late December and it was also very tight. I'm going to let the rest sit for a while to see if they loosen/dry up. I may try one more after dryboxing for a few days to see if that helps.

Beautiful dark wrappers and good flavor but the tight draw definitely lessens my enjoyment.

pretty sad experiences. especially since i've gone through several hundred of these over the years. the tight draws have seemed to happen more in the past few months.
i would also remind you that these are farm rolled, not "premium" and the price you pay reflects that. if you've had a bad experience and don't want to risk revisiting, that is certainly your perogative. but believe me, and perhaps some of the other elder members, they can also be some of the best sticks you'll ever smoke. right jeff?

Flavors are wonderful. I am not disappointed, nor do I think j-o's are off the list now. I think some time will definitely help. I was just curious if this was a common stage on younger ones that some age would remedy.

I took a J-O Corona Extra with me to the golf course. It was the only stick I carried with me that morning. I snipped, lit, and drew. Never was I so disappointed because the dang thing was like drinking a milk shake with a coffee stirrer.

I got some the first part of January and the Shorts and Lonsdale's are smoking well and very tasty........
See, I need to shop around and try some others so that I'll stay patient and let the bundle I got age a bit. I saw the lonsdales back a few weeks ago and didn't jump. Maybe next time I'll get a sampler.
