Lancero Fad?

Number 3, at the bottom. Are lanceros a fad and not making a comeback? I'm a huge fan of the size, I prefer the thinner ring gauge. However, I also haven't been smoking long enough to know if they're a fad/not making a comeback. Thoughts anybody?

I read that yesterday. I've been smoking a long time and I had always dismissed them as not my style, being a (what at one time was considered a) big ring guy, with 50 to 54 as my sweet spot.

But now after being given a few at several HERFs I would have to reconsider. While not as complex you really appreciate the wrapper more and the flavor it brings. An analogy might be a porterhouse house and a filet. Both beef, but one is big and has a lot of different flavors, the other is small, but refined and dense in it's flavor profile. Both are great and have their place depending on your mood.

They're not my go to size but I'll be on the lookout for some more to smoke for sure.

Robos are my go to size, anything bigger, and it feels like it's a chore to smoke most of the time. The exception usually being a lance, or a Londres

I thought I was in the minority but I have never had a lancero that I cared for, I had the new La Palina Goldie and was underwhelmed and it was a chore to keep it lit.

When smoking I don't want to have to be conscious of the amount of puffs I need to take to keep it burning, if that makes any sense, :eyebrow:

I'd say most of the members here enjoy the lance. But most B&M owners will tell you they don't sell. The average smoker goes for the big ring as more bang for the buck.
Myself, I go for the lance every time a new blend comes out that has one. And if they don't, I'll wish they did.

Lancero is a great vitola and it won't be a fad because the driver of current demand are the makers and the serious smokers, who both generally dig the lancero. It's not my favorite vitola, but I do enjoy them and they almost always taste as good or better than my favorite vitola of a given cigar.

Lanceros are never going to be a big selling size. While a lot of BOTLers love them, the average cigar consumer doesn't buy them. However, that doesn't mean they don't have their place in the marketplace. Lanceros cater to a smaller demographic, but a very important demographic to the cigar industry. Typically, the more "boutique" brands are the ones that lamcero smokers like to buy, thus that is why the "boutique" brands are the ones creating lanceros. The good thing about the industry is a lot of diversity in terms of brands and vitolas to meet the demands of a diverse customer base.

Lanceros will be around as long as they are profitable and I'm sure that will be for years to come. Lanceros typically are a great way to experience any brand of cigar because you get a realistic profile of the cigars' taste...albeit it's a smaller vitola. The RG ratio gives one a good view of wrapper/filler/binder and sometimes based on that experience alone will tell me that it's so good that bigger is better....a lot of times this holds true and we all want a bargain so we think of it as if small is good...let's go bigger and robustos are very popular. For those who choose the longer ones ( churchills) it means you have the time to devote a couple of hours and that's where the bargains really are....price point dictates where the better deal is and toros usually are a great deal.

I'm a fan of the londres as well. Robusto's aren't in my usual rotation as much as they were when I first started, however, I still have a bunch in the humi cause I like the time it takes to smoke - if that makes sense.

That makes sense, I guess most guys walking into a B&M who aren't really "in to" cigars will look at a lancero and be kind of turned off, for whatever reason. I was a little freaked by them when I first started, but have really come around to liking the smaller rg, and it's nice to have for when I want something smaller but don't want to smoke 2 or 3 PC's or mini-panatelas.

I'm a pretty big fan of lances. In truth I just like small ring gauge with Lonsdales and corona grande's being my favorites. I think it is mostly a fad, but I think the boutiques will throw a few out here and there but the big boys will stick to their bigger is better philosophy.

This philosophy, I just don't understand though. For instance I believe the following statements hold true:

BOTL generally prefer smaller ring gauges (smaller in this case lets call Robusto- down)
BOTL spend more in one purchase, than most people spend on cigars in a lifetime.
Random purchases like BIG RG, and don't much care about anything else

So therefore,

Selling BOTL smaller ring gauges will profit the company more than appeasing the random purchaser looking for a jaw-breaker...

This must not be the case however, but it doesn't make sense to me, granted I've pretty much assumed the whole situation.....

There are a lot of everyday smokers who smoke toros and bigger RGs than smaller ring gauges. Toros are generally the biggest selling size, and it's not just cigar smokers who smoke on occasion. This forum may not even be a good barometer for people who smoke cigars on a daily basis. There are more demographic groups than just casual cigar smokers and BOTLs. I know people who smoke 4+ cigars a day, and they smoke big RGs. I know a guy who smokes three LFD Diggers a day. Also, remember members on this forum or people who are into cigars as much as we are represent a very very small percentage of cigar smokers. Thankfully, companies do a great job in creating cigars for every pallet or vitola fan. So, regardless of what cigars you like just sit back as smoke what ever you want.

Yea, I suppose it's easy to make this world seem super small when you only frequent two internet boards!

I will say the occasional Churchill is a nice experience. Angels anvil FTW.

Lanceros are not fixed gear bikes, mustache wax, or bow ties.

Lanceros are not a fad. I honestly love them, and while they take a little practice smoking, once you get your lance pace down, you may never look back. Heck, there are few blends that I don't prefer in the lance over all other vitolas.

I like lances but most of my box purchases are coronas and, in the case of cc, petite coronas. Lanceros are damn sexy though!

Love lances myself but have different preferences depending on the smoke. For instance lp no9 I love the toro size but other lines the toro doesn't do it

I'm a little put off because I recently invested in a mustache wax company, but I will say that Lanceros are here to stay. They are being made for guys like us and as long as guys like us are buying them, why would they quit making them. AB and co can stick to big ring, but as long as PHJ and the like keeps making long skinnies, I will keep smoking them.
