So first of all, this isn't really pipe related. I just had a dream about them, and it got me thinking - I love cigars, and should I consider pipes? Then the next question that came to mind is this (and this is what I am really wanted to get at):

How many brothers tried a pipe, and gave it up just to go back to cigars?

I am about 50/50 st this point. I font love one more than the other just depends on my mood. The pipe does like my wallet better though.

I meant it is actually way less expensive. Besides the pipe which a cob actually smokes very well, the Tobacco is very inexpensive. You can get about 10 45min smokes of high end pipe tobacco for the same cost as a super premium cigar in the $13 range. So pipes save me a ton of money.

It is very different though, cigars to me are better in a way that the complexity changes up quite a bit. The pipe doesn't change much but it's like smoking your favorite part of your cigar for 45min. A lot of trial and error though. It takes some patience.

Pipe school drop out here. Just didn't find a tobacco satisfying, nor the patience to weather learning good technique to get a good bowl smoked up proper.

I have been trying out pipes for a while now. Still working on it. Takes more to get the technique down than with cigars. But I find the whole packing and smoking process therapeutic and just down right cool. I have also yet to find a pipe tobacco that really suits me. With cigars I was hittin' home runs within the first few cigars. It'll keep at it, but realistically if I don't find a tobacco I really dig I'll probably swing back to cigars exclusively. You'll probably not find the answer to your question until you give one a whirl yourself though.

i hacked at it for around fifteen years, ten of consistent on an off trying, and just now got it (or am starting to get it, only get to the heel of a smoke one in five). it isn't for everyone, but then again neither are cigars. y'know that one cigar you can go back to and say, "there, right there, i finally got it!"? same thing with pipe. if you never find that moment, it will never be for you, same as cigar. if you DO find that moment, you get a whole new neighborhood of the leaf to explore.

and, yes, initial buy in looks steep, but thirty to fifty for a low end briar (like grabow) or estate pipe if you can find a good shop to guide you, and you are good to roll. and hoshy is right, i have yet to find the dynamic highs and lows of a cigar in a bowl, but the median point is pretty nice.

I say give it a shot. I did about 6 months ago and now I'm probably 75% cigars and 25% pipe. The cost of entry is low and I think the key is to buy good quality tobacco not the drug store stuff. Hoshy is right about the price. I was amazed with how inexpensive tobacco is compared to cigars. There's a lot of different brands and blends to try. It's a totally different experience from cigars too.

At least it doesn't say, "Last night I had a dream about cleaning out my pipes."

That is Japanese to me... I have no idea what you are talking about (that is how much I have NOT looked into pipes).

It isn't really about the $$, really. Personally, I am most concerned with the learning curve. And then, if it is that much different than cigar smoking, is it even worth delving into if I am still in love with cigars (I guess that is something I have to figure out for myself)?
