So last week on Tuesday I went to my doctor. I’m on 2 different pills for my high blood pressure, 25 milligrams of Atenolol and 160 of Dyovan. He decides I should go to one pill, DyovanHC with a water pill in it. I agree cause I think it would be more convenient to take only one pill.

So I start it on Wednesday morning and all is going well. Thursday morning comes and I take it again. A couple hours into my day around 8 I notice my heart rate seems high. As the days progresses I’m very busy, but still notice that I can feel my heart pounding in my chest. I go to lunch and relax and it does not seem so bad.

After lunch I notice my heart rate is very high and I can feel my heart pounding in my chest. I take my rate and I’m about 120 beats a minute. At this point I start to have a panic attack. I tell my manager I need to go to the hospital ASAP. He has one of my colleagues drive me there.

We get there and I explain to the admittance person what's going on. They bring my right in to the cardiologic ER rooms and hook me up on an EKG. At this point they bring me right into a room and my panic attack hits again, at this point my heart rate is 136 beats a minute.

I now have 2 nurses, 1 doctor, an intern, my friend from work and my dad standing over me. I ask everyone that doesn’t need to be there to leave, they do. I explain to the doctor and a nurse everything that has gone on since Tuesday. The minute I said the doctor had me the Atenolol they gave me a weird look. They said lay there and relax we going to do blood work and a chest x-ray.

The blood work comes back fine and they decide to cancel the x-ray. I hear the doctor on the phone with my PCP and he asks what he asked me to stop the Atenolol. A few minutes later the doctors give me some Atenolol and after a while my rate comes down.

They said I should not of been told to stop it suddenly that I should have been weaned off it. They said not taking the Atenolol was like opening the flood gates and my heart wasn’t used to the additional blood flow and for me to go back on it till a plan for me to be weaned off it is discussed with my PCP.

So forward to today I go in and see my PCP and he says, yannoo I should of caught that with the Atenolol, but you came thru it okay. It took all I had not to punch him in his mouth. We kind of had an argument over why he took me off it and why he did not catch taking me off it would be a problem. He avoids it all together. At this point I said after 14 years I think its time I see a new PCP. He told me if that is how I feel maybe I should leave now and off I went.

So I have a new PCP in mind, I just need to see if he is accepting new patients.

It was also a big wake up call to get back in shape and get my health back together.

Glad to hear you are okay now....man that must have been scary.

And maybe you're right, this was a wake-up call. You're too young to be having these problems (though maybe a genetic link?), however, maybe now you'll be more proactive with your health.

Oh, and I just got a new PCP, and she is HOT!! Yesssir!!!

Damn that had to be scary. And what a jackass of a doctor. You think after 14 years he'd be atleast a little sorry about it. Good move in changing, I would have done the same.

Sometimes you have to 'luck' into a good PCP, other times it could be in your best interest to interview.

This is actually a good topic, 'how to find a good PCP.'

Let us know how everything goes.

Derek, I understand what you're going through. I also know from having close relationships with a few doctors that he most likely treated you in that manner to avoid a malpractice suit by admitting that he was wrong. It's easier to ignore it than face a courtroom and having to disprove that he screwed up. Unfortunately you had to go through what you did because he made a mistake but fortunately you're ok. I have never heard a doctor apologize for a mistake. Ever. Even when they screwed up my stomach from my acid reflux surgery.

Damn, that was an intense story.

Oh, and I would have wanted to punch him in the mouth too...but I think I would have just settled for a stern cussing out, and possibly a flip-off as I walked out of the office.

Glad yer okay!
