Saw this on Rich Perelman's CigarCyclopedia website today. I've never heard of this before, thought it was rather interesting...

The best wrapper from Cuba comes from the famed Vuelta Abajo region, right?

Not according to a story from the Cuban government’s official news service Prensa Latina, which said executives of Tabacuba “extolled” the Lazaro Pena production unit as the best wrapper producer in the country.

Whether true or not, the more interesting aspects of the report were that the Lazaro Pena leaf production is centered not in the Vuelta Abajo or even in the Pinar del Rio region on the west end of the island. The Lazaro Pena farms are located south of Havana in the San Antonio region, an underrated producer of wrapper which has become more and more important over the past 10 years.

The report noted that the Lazaro Pena group supplied 17,000 pounds (7,802 kg) of wrapper leaf for cigars, specified as half of the total Cuban wrapper output last season.
