Since it is a LCDH I would say you are probably good. The one in Grand Caymen was straight up legit with a nice selection. That is a brand new port complex in Falmouth, so it should be nice. I think I will route my next cruise through there and check it out myself. Let me know what you find out when you get back.,

I may be making a trip to Jamaica in the very near future. If so, we'll be headed to Ocho Rios area and would pass right through there. You can bet I'll stop.

If it all goes down I'll let y'all know. And again, if it all goes down, I'll be headed in the next month or month and a half.

That would be great... it does say on the website that it's only open when a cruise ship is in port. Not sure if you'll be on a cruise or there the same time as a cruise.

Yeah, I noticed that. I'd likely be going through during the day light hours and I'm pretty certain that there are cruise ships every day in the standard ports of call.

The wife and I are talking pretty seriuosly about the trip...so we'll see.

P.S. - here are some highlights from the most recent State Department message on Jamaica:

"Crime, including violent crime, is a serious problem in Jamaica..."

"... random acts of violence, such as gunfire, may occur anywhere."

"The primary criminal concern for tourists is becoming a victim of theft."

"In several cases, armed robberies of U.S. citizens have turned violent when the victims resisted handing over valuables."

"Crime is exacerbated by the fact that police are understaffed and often ineffective."

"... there have been frequent allegations of police corruption."

"Travelers should avoid walking alone, exercise special care after dark..."

"Each year the Embassy receives several reports of sexual assaults against U.S. citizens..."

"It is important to realize that sexual assault allegations generally do not receive the same type of law enforcement attention in Jamaica..."

"Take care when carrying high value items such as cameras and expensive cell phones or when wearing expensive jewelry on the street."

"Women's handbags should be zipped and held close to the body."

"Men should carry wallets in their front pants pocket."

"The U.S. Embassy advises its staff to avoid... urban centers..."

"The U.S. Embassy also cautions U.S. citizens not to use public buses..."

"In 2010 and 2011 a number of U.S. families reported being robbed inside their resort hotel rooms while they slept."

"Illegal drug use is prevalent in some tourist areas..."

"...date rape drugs, such as Rohypnol, has become more common at clubs and private parties."

"Marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other illegal narcotics are especially potent in Jamaica..."

Anyway...... I think you get my point...... go Barbados instead (new very nice LCDH there, too, and I was there for its Grand Opening)!
Can't say I was thrilled with Jamaica to begin with. I knew it had a bad reputation although I hadn't bothered to read the SDs site on it. Thanks for the info!

If I wasn't on a cruise, I wouldn't go to Jamaica either. Frankly I go on a cruise just to get away, the ports of call are not that important to me. The wife uaually picks those, and I get one, maybe two vetos, then just go wherever. I could just as easily stay on the ship at the ports and enjoy the peace and quiet with a cigar. You couldn't pay me to go further into Jamaica than the ports. I would like to go to Barbados though, and I have heard good things about the Grand Turks too.

My wife and I need to go on a cruise someday, everyone of these threads I read makes me want to go on one even more.

Sounds like Jamaica would be a good place for a real life "Punisher" to visit, lol.

This would make our 5th trip to jamaica. I guess I'm a fool, but I love the place. love the people and have been off the resorts to see the real Jamaica...still love it. To each his own.

Threadjack alert:

Can I be the naysayer if you haven't already made up your mind?

Jamaica sucks.

What did that guy say?

Yeah, I said it... Jamaica sucks.

The only reason people go to Jamaica is because of the cheaper cost for all-inclusive resorts. Apart from the very nice resorts (and some ARE very nice) and a couple cool spots (like Dunns Falls, Negril beach, etc...), MOST of the country is a hole....... and, for Caribbeaners... they're the rudest of all!

If you're looking for a Caribbean country to visit, try somewhere like Barbados! Whole country/island is about 160 square miles with just as nice of beaches and resorts as Jamaica, but with FRIENDLY people, GOOD food, and you don't have to worry about getting shot or stabbed if you want to explore (there's a reason cruise ships give their passengers boundary lists and EVERY major resort is all-inclusive in Jamaica... they want you to love the resort and port areas and not really see the REAL Jamaica that is so crime and drug ridden, the State Department is constantly warning travelers how to act when you're robbed or where to stay away from to not get shot or raped)!

Now...... a cruise stop? Just swinging into the port area for a little shopping, buy something hemp, grab a couple stogies, drink some rum, say "Yah mon," a couple times? You'll be fine...... but an outright vacation? I've made the mistake, brother......

My .01 (usually not worth .02).

Oh, and that trip may be closer than I think. The wife and I made a decision this weekend that should put me in Jamaica in about a month, or less.

Same... I was happy to hear they had opened an LCDH on one of our stops. None of the stops had one when we first booked this cruise. Thanks again for all the responses and info.

What the hell does all of this have to do with the original question ???
Welcome back! You're always so friendly to have around!

Let me get you up to speed.

1. The OP's question was answered immediately... the very next posting!
2. The thread then changed to a chat between the OP, zama, and bball about trips and cruises to Jamaica.
3. I then chimed in to suggest a different nearby island, with a new LCDH, because I hate Jamaica and the gov't thinks it's unsafe.
4. Gravity then said cruise talks make him jealous.

5. And that's when your lovely self came in to add your normal charm!

6. We ignored you... and bball came back to say he disagrees with me/Uncle Sam and loves Jamaica!
7. I replied that he needs to tell us how the LCDH is when he goes, then!

You caught up now? You understand how we all got there? You see the connection now?

See...... we were ALL being FRIENDLY and chatting about CCs, LCDHs, and trips to places that have them..... I'm sorry you couldn't keep up........... again.....

You should really think about reading comprehension courses... or maybe charm school...
