I'm assuming this is for a PC and not a server?

Was (and still am) a FreeBSD fan. Have it on a couple of servers, still.
Used Slackware for many years.
Screwed around with RedHat and Mandarin.
Installed Suse cause we are a Novell shop and it's fine. No complaints.

Easy install ... up to date drivers. Fairly secure out of the box.

Replacing a desktop ... ok
On a small server ... little tweaking.

I Run ALL BSD (Mac OSX) but ran Red Hat on the PC's for a long time. I think it was an easy install, and the Packages were easy to work with and configure. If your running a Duo-Core look HARD into OSX!.. VERY nice. I run this on many machines at home, and right now (Here) in the office.

Gentoo is a royal pain in the ass because everything is compiled and it grabs sources all over the place like freebsd does and there are so many places you can screw up your system.

My web server is running freebsd right now, and although I like it I think I still prefer having a package system like debian and ubuntu.

Ubuntu is my favorite right now because
1) it comes with everything you need
2) its easy to install
3) all the software is up to date

I have been using Linux for almost 10 years now, so I know enough about it that I don't need to go through 5 million steps to set up a system as a learning adventure. I just want to use the thing so Ubuntu is great. Their forums are a big help too.

I have used most of the distros over the years from Slackware to Redhat to Suse to Mandrake to Debian to Gentoo. Currently I am getting ready to install the latest Ubuntu again.

I fiddled around with Ubuntu last year. I had some issues with sound in GNOME. Also some video driver issues. My hardware isn't at all out there, nVidia, VIA, and Intel. Nothing crazy but it just didn't go quite right. Went back to Windows 2000 Pro and haven't had any problems.
