I have the 3 D cell and the 2 AA cell. Think they're a good combo. Although, I always wanted the big 6 or 8 D cell.

I used to use Mag Lites exclusively and still have a 3-D Cell in my pickup. For the past few years though, I've been using the small lithium battery combat lights. I have a Streamlight Scorpion and a Pelican M6. They are cheaper versions of the Surefire lights that have become popular in recent years. The batteries have a 10 year shelf life so you're always guaranteed to have light when you need it. And what a light it is! It's literally blinding, which is why they're used as combat lights. The drawback is that they supposedly only have about an hour of continuous runtime. Having said that, I've had the Scorpion for a few years and have only had to change the batteries once and haven't changed them in the Pelican in the two plus years I've had it. Once you get used to a light this bright it's hard to go back to the Mag lights. It always seemed like the batteries were dead whenever I grabbed a Mag. Also, the lithium lites are a defensive weapon all by themselves. If you're walking along in the dark and someone acts like they may wish to do you harm, just hit them with the light and they are effectively blinded. It's that bright. I'm definitely a convert.

I keep my flashlight in the same spot all the time. That way if the power goes out I can easily find it. In addtion, if I ever have to bash someone over the head, I can do so easily.

Great choices. For an incredible value, take a look at the Brinkman Maxfire LX, which is available at Wally World. I picked one last year for $12.99. It uses the CR123A lithium batteries. It has been sturdy and reliable. The reflector is not as well polished as the Surefires, but it is 1//4 of the price and nearly as good. For that price you can buy several and keep them in vehicles, tool boxes, the home, etc. The beauty of the lithium batteries is that they have a 10-year shelf life. DO NOT buy batteries from a local dealer. If you look around you can get them in bulk for about $1.00 - $1.25 each, delivered. Battery Station is one good source. Take a look at Candle Power Forums for detailed flashlight and battery reviews.

I looked for the Brinkmann MaxFire at Walmart today but my local store didn't have them. I did find something else handy though. It's a 6in1 SafetyLight from SafetyCross. It's a handcranked flashlight, safety flasher, emergency FM radio, siren, compass and cellphone charger as seen here. I paid $18.95 for it. It may not be the quality of some of the units out there but it seems good enough to do for a short time emergency/power outage. 30 seconds of cranking is supposed to give you 1 hour of light. The radio has fairly good reception.

I have a FEW Maglites floating around. Have 2 or 3 here in this room with the radio gear also. Best thing since Sliced bread.
