I know we have hasd the votes about what is your preferred method of lighting and toasting.

My post is a little different.

Today I lit my 7-20-4 with cedar matches. I used to exclusively light all of my cigars with those before getting my torch lighter.

I noticed that lighting with the matches gave me a great cigar experience. Not sure if the 7-20-4 was just that awesome or if the matches had to do with it.

Is it just me or do any of you other brothers here feel that the flavor is enhanced and made better when lighting with matches over the torch or soft flame?

I think i am going to go back to exclusively using my wood matches.

Love the process of using wood matches and/or cedar strips!

And I think that's just it...The process.

Cigars are all about the experience, and I think the added process heightens that experience; not to mention the element of nostalgia since matches are mostly a thing of the past.

Bingo; the experience. Every time I use a cedar spill the cigar is better (feeling wise) awesome experience, started using them more often. Don't even carry a lighter anymore, but Im also trying to smoke great cigar exclusively as well so that may having something to do with it as well. I got a box of 50 or 100 for free when I bought a box a while back and I love them. There is a company that makes a box of 100 for 25 I think, when they are free they are worth it; not sure if I had to pay for them it would be the same. You can use the cedar sheet that come in boxes as well; just break them up and enjoy.

But, wind never really wants to work with me
This is why I use my torch most of the time. The process of lighting with a match is nice though. I haven't really noticed a major difference other than it's a little more satisfying to use matches...well when the wind isn't blowing, if it's blowing it's damn frustrating. Come to think of it, it can be frustrating with the torch if it's windy also. Anyway what I was going to say was that the matches burn cooler than a torch, but if you're not sticking the torch right up on the cigar and scorching it then the difference (in my experience, limited as it is compared to some of these guys) is minimal. To me the process of lighting the cigar has more to do with my enjoyment than what I'm lighting it with and as long as I get a good light I'm happy.

Well my post was really meant to ask if any of you notice a change in flavor when lighting with matches over torch? I feel that the cigars really do taste better. I lit a papas fritas with a match and one with a lighter and the match one tasted better. All of the torch lit cigars I have had as of late have not tasted as good. Maybe it is mental haha.

P.s I know papas fritas are generally not consistent because of what they are rolled from.

Well, good quality gas is not supposed to impart any flavor, so IMHO using matches or cedar is making a cigar taste better than using gas is more than likely in your head. Again, the whole experience thing may get you thinking that the cigar tastes beter, etc.

Its because a match doesn't burn as hot so you're lighting the tobacco in a gentler way, not scorching it. Just like when smoking, you dont want to over heat it. I pretty much only use cedar spills at home and those also lend a hint of cedar aroma and taste.

i'm gonna post my vote for the psychological cam, it adds to the experience.

then again, there is a lot to be said for the burn temp. i use a torch, the apex of the flame is almost an inch away from the foot of the cigar. even with soft flame, which i have been using more of the past couple few, or matches, i try and keep distance from the actual tobaccos, ising heat rather than flame to ignite.

so, a combination of the process adding to the experience, and it being harder to overcook the cigar, i guess?

I've been using wood matches lately, but have not noticed any taste differences. However, if I need to touch up a cigar I have found matches cause less of a harsh flavor.

This is pretty much the right comment here...cedar spills do impart a taste to the cigar and it's not overwhelming as much as it's just enough to notice a subtle hint of it. It naturally dissipates after a couple of minutes but it's the best start for a cigar that I know. Torches tend to burn at over 1500 degrees and that's pretty hot...enough to scorch tobacco in a matter of a few seconds and when you draw on that scorched tobacco all the way up the cigar you have essentially contaminated a certain portion of the cigar. It takes quite awhile to get that taste out of the cigar. Double and triple torches are just a faster way to light but it comes with the same warning of how much heat is being delivered to the end of your cigar. Matches/cedar spills and soft flames tend to bring the cigar a better chance of being lit in a more favorable condition...heat that is less than 1500 degrees and even less when you don't let the actual flame touch the end of your cigar. Yes, it takes longer to light but you increase the taste of your $10 cigar significantly...otherwise if taste isn't important then buy Swisher Sweets or Dutch Master. :skew:
