Matilde Renacer Lancero 7X40 (Limited regular production: 25,000 Boxes)
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan
superbly executed construction and appearance, this cigar is beautiful.
The wrapper is a smooth and even hued Autumn brown. The veins are understated and the pack is even with just a bit of give.
I've been waiting for this stick to come out for a long time.. (Well it feels like a long time but I really couldn't tell you when I heard they were making it) I believe it was a short while after I reviewed the Matilde Corona (which I scored a 94) so you can imagine my delight when I heard they were coming out with a long and skinny in the same blend.
The foot takes a good light and the cap cuts just fine, time to get into the nitty gritty of it. The first picture the Matilde Lance snaps for me is that of Earth, creamy peanut, just the right amount of sweetness, a smooth retro with an itching spice left in the throat. The burn and draw are both excellent. The smoke production off the foot is nearly non existent and you just might think it's out but one pull lets you know she's there. The strength is starting out at medium through the first inch. The nic level is very nice for an after meal smoke. I'm picking up a bit of leather and plain cake donut. (that's a first) a bit of cinnamon spice coats the profile and with that, the creamy peanut loses hold.
The sweetness morphs from subtle into a fruity hard candy. The sweetness coats the tongue like a powdered sugar. The earth still hangs on in the background. The stick try's to go out on me just as I'm going to praise its razor and effortless burn, I damn near almost pull out the lighter but instead gave it a few puffs and she pops back with a smile. The spice drys the throat as the sweetness coats my tongue with an added twang. I caught the creamy peanut hiding in the smoke but just as soon it disappeared.
I'm getting into the second third which I'll pause for a second to mention that I'm pairing this smoke with a Yirgacheffe Peaberry brew and some Delta blues. This a new brew from JBC Roasters that I'm trying out (94 Rating) I won't get into the specifics but it's a wonderful coffee and pairs unimaginably well. The Delta blues is always an excellent listen and let's me drowned out the world and get lost in the smoke. Speaking of lost... In my pause, I've lost the burn lol. Woops. A quick relight and she is back burning razor. Getting into the second third, I taste Ligero..mmmmm love me some Ligero. You can feel the uptick in the stomach as well, just a bit but it's there. Nutty and spicy mixed with wood and that powdered sweetness that has pulled back just a bit.
The wood reminds me of a pipe tobacco blend. The sweetness sharpens up and reminds me of a ripe blackberry. The spice pops back in with some sweet cream that sizzles like a highly carbonated cream soda. This profile as it stands fits right in with a homemade creamed soda.. Earthy root, sweet cream, spice and the strength has moved to medium full. This profile has so much complexity and progressively morphs into something new at every turn. The strength is really starting to show its colors too. This smoke is living up to every expectation I had of it which is rare I've come to find.. And mind you this is ROTT, I just received these in the mail today and it has only been resting in the Wineador for about 8 hours.. The only negative I can put on this stick is that it needs to be puffed a bit faster than I might like to keep it going but I'm going to attribute that to its freshness and having not let it settle. Can't wait to let this one sit for a few months.
I'm getting to the final third and the profile is gaining in grit. The sweetness has backed way off and moved over for a ramped up spice, wood, earth and moved into full strength. You know a stick has got some power when you're trying to puff on it to gather all of the flavors and you've got to back off because it says so..."alright buddy....just take it easy, no one needs to get hurt ya'hear" alright, let's try this again.. The stick has required three relights, the wrapper just seems just a touch oily and makes for a slightly hindered burn. This Lance has not even thought of trying to run. The profile gains a mineral presence as I get into the last third.
The delicacy of the profile has been thrown to the wind and we are left with a strong, gritty, spicy stick.. Won't hear any complaints from me! The sweetness is replaced by an orange like zest. This stick is a trip around the world in regards to the experience the blend gives you. Starts out in the a medium smooth, sweet, creamy, complex profile.. moves through wood, earth and nuts and you find yourself at a full strength, spicy, gritty finish line. You get every last cents worth and more. This is one I will have a hard time letting rest but will equally find myself patient with because I know what I'll have waiting for me..
Smoke time: 2hr
Fresh Score: 93 (I smoked another the following morning and these really need some rest to help with the issue of staying lit)
