Can someone provide a valid explanation as to why media is allowed at the show, this is a trade show, for orders to be placed for retailers whom sell cigars and cigar related items. So why have "media" such ad bloggers and print media who have zero ability to place an order at this sales convention ?

To some it might be a way to keep more of the smoking publics eyes on the goings on even doubly so with how many new releases are held at this show versus say.. Big Smoke or other such events that are more "public" . Just a thought but I can see how it can clog up the floor.

Free advertisement for the vendors?
I will ask that question, to a manufacturer to find out if that is true and of so you bring up a very valid point, they should get free software for the ads they make and not samples of cigars for the actual retailers

Some manufacturers love the free exposure/press they get. Some consumers like to read about the new products/coverage. Some retailers don't like that they have to wait at times while a "media" person takes up their time.

The IPCPR only allows a set amount of media on the floor and they have a badge that states they are media. Some vendors won't talk to them and some will.

Two questions if you don't mind, a retailer had to be member of ipcpr to go, does a media member have to pay that fee, and what is the number of media members in comparison to the retailers is it 1 to 100 ? Just asking ?

Depending on who you talk to, you will get different answers. Some love that media attends, some hate it. I see the benefits and disadvantages of each side of the argument. Personally, I think if you are going to have media there, there should be a specific "part" of the show dedicated to media, but that's just a personal opinion.

Media has to be a member of IPCPR to attend. You can read more here: http://www.ipcpr.org/?page=InternetMediaBenefit

I've always wondered what qualifies as media. Can Joe Blow just start a blog and say he is media?
My answer is yes but no solid data behind that
There is an application process & requirements. You'll also find this informative: http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.ipcpr.org/resource/resmgr/internet_media_membership.pdf

I was watching the Half Ashed show not long ago and they were discussing IPCPR and I believe they mentioned when media was allowed at the show it was a little questionable but now is somewhat liked. The issue of having a consumer day (one like one day of he whole convention) has been brought up several times I believe and they keep tabling it. I am not positive on this but believe this is what I have heard.

As a Joe Schmoe consumer I'm very glad the media is there, its a neat way for the makers to get in front of the camera and do their pitch for the new sticks. Keeps me informed.

Derek,

Media are reviewed case by case for acceptance. Not 100% sure how many total badges are allowed but it is somewhere around 50 total or 25 accepted applications. I know the Membership allows 2 badges per applicant and they can purchase additional badges and I think a max of 2 additional badges can be purchased for a total of 4 media per application.

I am basing this information on what I recall and what a person "in the know" believes is correct".

This is the largest event of the year for the premium tobacco industry. Media is there to cover what is new. We are full paying members.

I didn't see a lot of media at this year's show. There were certainly more in previous years.

The simplest reason for media to be present at the IPCPR is to report on new products and that includes smoking and reviewing new products. I personally don't see anything wrong with that.

Its great to have legitimate media at the show, but in all honesty 99% of bloggers should not be allowed. I love the dedication that many of them have to their hobby but the trade show just really is not a place for them to be.
