The microwave we had for years bit the dust.

What's to look for in one? Wattage, size & finish?

DO NOT GET A GE or HOTPOINT MICROWAVE!!!!

There, that's my advice! If you do, it will break on you. :stickbeat

Over the range microwaves in stainless steel are very popular as are black finishes. If an over the range microwave won't work for you, then you really need to consider how much space you want to lose and what you will be cooking in it. If you only use it to heat water for coffee and cook popcorn, you can get a smaller microwave. If you are like me and like to nuke three bowls of Top Ramen noodles for your kids, then you will want to go with something larger.

I am a fan of whirlpool appliances, but that's just me. Of course wattage is important, but I wouldn't waste my time worrying about a certain model being powerful enough. Look for something you like first and check wattage last, most microwaves are powerful enough to cook anything quickly anymore.

Sharp Carousel. I inherited the family one and it's ~30 years young and still works like a champ.

Despite my favoritism towards Whirlpool, I happen to have a Sharp. It's been a pretty good microwave. It has had some problems, but nothing worth replacing it over at this point...I mean I don't have hump growing out of my back yet so the radiation can't be too bad right? ;)

I dunno I'm thinking I need to replace mine. Every time my wife nukes some popcorn I blackout and wake up two blocks and and very uncomfortable from soiling myself. I wasn't too concerned until last week when I bit the neighbors cat.

Well you have to ask yourself, what are you going to do with it. If you cook meals in it spend a little more money, if you are going to heat up left overs and cook popcorn DON"T SPENT TOO MUCH MONEY. I just got one the matched the frig and fit above the stove. .02
