I love model trains. Never had my own but we used to play with my dad's old ones when we were kids. Always wanted to get some but we move around so much that it just seems impractical.

We went through a small phase as kids. @sean : Have you taken the kids to the model railroad museum in San Diego?
Wouldn't surprise me if you didn't even know it was there - my Dad loved it more than us.

Unfortunately, you just missed their Friday fundraising event...

Beer and train lovers “hop” aboard this holiday season and combine some of your favorite things: Ales, rails, and ugly Christmas sweaters. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 11th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm and enjoy local craft brews from Julian Hard Cider, Societe Brewing, Nickel Co., and Intergalactic Brewing Company. Enjoy some delectable delights from The Grove Pastry and Blush Desserts. Gather your friends for the most “hop-n-ing” event by wearing the most abundantly adorned, cheesy and downright hideous holiday sweater to this year’s Ales & Rails event at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. Plus you'll get a chance to win ugly Christmas sweater merchandise provided by The Tipsy Elves.

I've been countless times. Love that place. Think it's time to go back.

Some of my fondest memories from when I was a child were with my dad and his railroads. We used to set up the whole garage for weeks, building, changing and making new stuff. Such a cool idea and hopefully you kids will love it as much as I did.

Had a nice set growing up and worked on it with my dad. He had it layed out on plywood in the basement. I still have the set actually. Just nowhere to set it up since we moved to a different house years ago that's alot smaller than where we once lived.

My Dad had a Lionel O gauge set that he got as a boy. All I remember about it, is that it had a gorgeous 4-8-4 Pennsylvania steam locomotive.
In my early adult life, I messed around with some HO and N gauge stuff. I have no idea what happened to them.

Several years ago, right before Christmas, Sam's Club had some Bachman "Garden" gauge train sets on clearance at around 85% off of retail. I grabbed one, their "White Christmas Express" set. I set it up around the Christmas tree, and all the grandkids loved it. These things are huge. Some folk set these up outside as part of their landscape and gardens, hence the name "Garden" gauge.

The next year, Sam's had the "Night Before Christmas" set on the same ridiculous clearance, so I grabbed two. One for each of my daughter's families. The grandkids love it when the trees are finally up, and it's time to setup the trains.

I got my uncles old lgb "garden" set. He bought it when my cousins kids were little, and since they all left for college, he passed it to me since I'm one of the last ones in the family with youngsters.

It has definitely re-sparked my interest. I went to my folks house and dug-out my old HO stuff... now, to stake out a place for a layout.

Totally cool! I had a standard plywood board ( with some overrun ) H.O. setup in my attic room as a kid. With cars, buildings, roads, and tunnels. Two separate control runs with a "changeover' switch to move the locomotives and freight cars around. ( Had a designated freight yard. ) Then a new setup again later in life.. . at my first house as the kids grew up. The tracks have been discarded, but I still have the cars.
