So I have 2 of these both from different, very reliable sources. Both were gifted, but one is a much newer vintage, I believe late 07, the other is at least 3 years old. The older one is far darker and oilier than the new one. Any thoughs on this?

Another thought here...maybe they are not both #2's. They are both Torpedo shaped, and i can't find any other Monte with that shape.

what Wade said... You will find though that whatever box these came out of the rest of the cigars in that box will be of almost the exact same shade. I have cubans of the same brand from different years that go from a very dark brown to a almost connecticut shade.

That should be the big clue right there. As long as you get from reliable sources, you should be good to go.
Cigars will always vary a bit from box to box - even from the same factory in the same year.

Yeah, i'm not wooried about either being fugazis but rather if age made them darken or if it was just common to be shade differences as stated earlier here. Or maybe a vitola or release I did not know of. Thanks for the help guys.

Age will make them darker, as the wrapper retains from the rolled leaf. But it is true about color from the same manufacture in different boxes. Its a mixture of both. I have some from 15 yrs ago that I am just getting to now.

Not always, I have cigars from the 70's and 80's that have very light wrappers.

Wrapper color being different is fine.

Cuban wrappers can be different shades at times. The truth is in the taste.

Smokem up.

I do not know for sure if this is going to be an official released product but it was sent to an official retailer as a sample for review.

By the way the dark wrapper Monte #2 had a much better review than the light.

Check out what is soon to be released...
I don't know the retailer, but there is something extremely fishy about that. First, while there is color variation from box to box, it is not common to have such extreme variation within the same box. Cigars are sorted by color and boxed with similar colors within the same box. But more importantly, the lighter wrapper cigars are not even shaped appropriately. They are not even close to being uniform with their shape. Some heads are more bulbous than others and look like crap. I realize that especially when dealing with figurados the cigars are not going to be exactly alike, but they should be much more uniform in shape, no matter what the shade of the wrapper. I don't know where this picture came from, but there is no way I would post or send these pictures to anyone if I were a vendor because they just look too much like fugazi.

This image came from FoH a VERY good source, and was posted by the owner...I am sure that some of you have used them..I know I have.

This box of 10 was sent to him for review from Habanos s.a the distributor, it was intentional.

His review is posted on the forum, but he states that the darker of the two "This Monte 2 reminds me of a lighter version of the Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios but with 30% less body."

They are not fake.

I'm very surprised that Habanos SA would send out such awful looking cigars. If I received them from a vendor I would send them back, and I have sent a box back to the vendor a grand total of once in the past 10 years. I trust what Rob said, but those look like shit.

Thanks for sharing the info.

Hey Dave, so far, every Monti#2 I had was the lighter color, the source is cuban lou, so it's fine. both boxes I got are that light color and all of them look very much the same.
so far I had 3 of them, still not ready of course, but one of the boxes I bought will get a few years on it.
i guess we'll know how good they really are in about 5 years

My guess is that in the future, you may be able to order a box of Monte Maduro #2's
